This game is kind of a joke, it doesn't even support AA, whereas San Andreas did... it's just unbelievable, it's like they're taking steps backwards in terms of world size (only one city, SA had 3 major cities) and of course advanced graphics settings.

sirlag01

Once again, people don't understand why it doesn't have AA and automatically label it a console port. GTA 4 had very advanced rendering methods for its time. It uses a deffered renderer which makes normal AA very buggy and problematic in DX9. As for graphics settings, obviously has more than SA.

LOL yet it doesn't even have AA. I'd rather take SA's graphics with AA over GTAIV's, and GTAIV's graphics aren't even good.

with amd cards u can have MLAA.....and it works fine

Yeah, but what about Nvidia? There's no real native support for it, whereas San Andreas had an AA option in the game menu, bloody unbelievable.

It's such a shame the game is badly optimized. I really wanted to pick this up for my new rig and play through it again. Perhaps i will just go for the episodes.

I recommend doing that. The episodes combined are about as long as core GTA IV, and you get the new weapons and storyline.

I have yet to play it since I'm doing Lost of the Damned now, might give it a little go though.

It's the same game on the technical front. Still has the awful optimization. I'm sorry.

I've already told you why GTA 4 didn't have AA. It's method of rendering at the time did not support MSAA in any form. It was innovative and AA would cause artifacts and murder performance. Today we have solutions like MLAA. What is your point? You would rather take SA's graphics with 24 x MSAA rather than stock GTA 4 without any AA which looks much better anyway? Get out of here. I know this is a poorly concealed attempt at PC elitism, with you trying to call out GTA 4 for its lack of AA, just stop.

Besides, GTA IV looks just fine without AA, especially with mods like iCEnhancer and Ultimate Textures.

I second this. Unless you're crazy about the GTA IV graphics mods like ICEnhancer. Not sure if running around in pretty graphics is worth your while, but if you're looking to play more GTA, get the episodes from liberty city. They're great. (:

Yes I'd rather take GTA SA's graphics with high AA than GTAIV's stock, which doesn't look that much better than San Andreas IMO. I don't care why it doesn't have AA, such an innovative renderer without AA? What a joke. And who the hell do you think you are calling me a PC elitist? I am definitely not, just in this day and age, all games should fully support AA. Why don't you get out of here?

Thanks for the heads up guys. I found the episodes from Liberty City at $20 from my local EB games. How can i say no?

4x SSAA and 60 FPS? You're lucky to get that, you're effectively running the game at 4x the resolution

Download some mods and it makes it run 10x better and also major improvement in the graphics. Ex. Realistic IV, Visual IV, + get ENB series.

Exactly, if we were going to judge a game's overall technical achievements in whether they have AA or not then Crysis would suck (Lets face it, AA is a BEAST in Crysis and it end ups being more demanding to enable 4XAA than running the game on high settings), F.E.A.R. 3 would be unwatchable in DX9, almost every UE3 game would look horrendous and the less said about old games the better.

Running on a GTX 460 and an i5 2310 Quad, I get around 20 frames per second with everything on very high(And the settings are within the GPU memory limits), at 1080p.

WTF is wrong with this game? Picked it up on steam during the summer sale. The game runs fine on a mixture of high/very high with 33 Draw distance, at 60fps, but when I up a few more settings, it goes ballistic.

Any patches?

Mischievity
It ran alot better for me then that, and this is when I had a gtx285. 4 gigs ram, dualcore 3.2, check ur system and settings. I really didnt have a problem with it, havent tried it since I upgraded, but I assume it would run like butter now.
