[QUOTE="evildead6789"]

[QUOTE="Gambler_3"]Sorry but other reviews arent painting the same picture for the 7870 XT as you are pretending it to be.

5158_33_sapphire_radeon_hd_7870_xt_tahit

5158_34_sapphire_radeon_hd_7870_xt_tahit

5158_35_sapphire_radeon_hd_7870_xt_tahit

Link.

There is a pretty obvious gulf between the 7870XT and high end cards, stop kidding yourself.

Elann2008

It's amazing how you're able to interpret a review completely wrong. The 7870 from powercolor is also based on the tahiti le chip.

The other 7870 is a normal hd 7870 chip but it's an oc edition. The 7950 with boost from his is also an oc edtion.  that's not a normal hd 7950. It outperforms the reference hd 7970 ghz edition. Kinda weird for chip that's higher ranked , isn't it.

The 7870 xt and powercolor version are not oc editions.

If you would have read the the conclusion of the article,  you wouldn't have made such a fool of yourself again. They're clearly saying the 7870 xt is a superior chip to the 7870 and there might be some confusion because of the fact that it comes at stock clock out of the box while a lot of other 7870's on a custom pcb come as oc editions, factory overclocked. They didn't even touch the voltage on that xt version, which at this point you now can change.

Off course if the article that posted was actually up to date , it would have closer to the truth. The review from techradar is from 24 february, while tweaktown is still from january, where they still used the old drivers.

And since the last driver update there was big difference in performance, especially in comparison with nvidia cards, which brings met to the next point. I was comparing hd 7870 xt with a gtx 670 and gtx 660 ti, not with a hd 7950 or 7970. So the so called gulf you're speaking about between the 7950 and the 7870 xt has nothing to do with i said, but it's a fact if you use voltage tweaking, you would come closer to that oc'd 7950 than in the article you posted.

The card also get's the editors choice award on the very article you just posted. Weird, because according to you there's no difference with the normal hd 7870.

hardwareheaven also gave the card an award

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1651/pg13/sapphire-hd-7870-xt-with-boost-tahiti-le-graphics-card-review-conclusion.html

Tomshardware also ranks this card higher than the 7870 and closer to the 7950 in their article

'Best graphics cards for the money'

So off course, you're right and everyone else is wrong

That sounds exactly like you.

Keep making a fool of yourself.   You make one 7870 discovery that was already on the market and no one cares and now you're some expert.  This isn't monkey science.

At least I'm not pretentious, trying hard to come off as some professional or expert. I never said I was. But I'd like to think I've given more good advice than bad.   A lot of people have already proven you wrong yet you stand here gloating. If I'm the hardware noob, you've proven very well you're the PC hardware idiot.

Evildead what made you come back?

You left this board a while ago saying you prefered consoles, and PC hardware wasn't worth the money.

You have good memory lol.

Well i have seen some titles on the pc lately where the difference on the console was too big to ignore Dead space 3 and far cry 3 for instance.

Off course games like crysis 1& 2, metro 2033 even battlefield. were always way better on the pc, but these are only a handfull of games, and last year i didn't play em anymore.

I'm sure some other games still look a lot better too, but sometimes it's also a matter of taste isn't it and if the difference isn't too big then I prefer the easyness of a console. I'm also not gaming a lot with mouse & keyboard anymore. I kinda got hooked on the xbox controller, but not for competitive multiplayer off course.

Still when i saw dead space 3 on the x360, i though f$ck this, i'm gone spend some more time on my pc. And I bought a hd 7870 xt...

I conceded the fact that the XT is slightly better than regular 7870 but it isnt close to high end cards like you said. Voltage tuning can be done on every card you know.

GTX 670 is considerably better than 7950 so it was completely relevant to have the 7950 in the graph.

I myself have a Gtx 660 and i can tell you that it performs great in games like Battlefield 3 (MP) or Crysis 2/3(Crysis 3 need to turn everything to medium for constant 60+) All of which are at 1080p. However a Gtx 670 is indeed alot better. You should get the 670. Even so the 660 OC is a great card and wont disappoint you. (i think the 670 is better than the 7950 OC)

The only thing i wanted to prove is what a buffoon you really are. Still you twist and turn to justify your idiotic remarks.

Voltage tuning is already done on oc editions.

Weird that one of the biggest names on computer hardware (tomshardware) says the hd 7870 xt comes close to a hd 7950 (and they're not the only ones), but you, gambler aka raging idiot, says otherwise. Funny how some things never change

And the gtx 670 is on par with the hd 7950, the hd 7950 with boost is way faster. Where did you ever hear the hd 7950 is slower than a gtx 670?

Let me guess, they didn't use the latest drivers...

So what's your next statement?

I dont give a damn what any website says, I form my own conclusions. The 6870 is close to the 6950 but not the GTX 670.

perfrel_1920.gif

GTX 670 is 15% faster than 6950 stock vs stock.

I can use foul language as well but I dont have such a miserable life as to do that on an internet forum.

I you want to go into a discussion with me you better stay up to date. Me calling you names is not because I have a miserable life but because you always try to prove me wrong. In IT it's always about being up to date and I thought you would have learned by now that if you want to go into a discussion with me you better double or triple check your research data, because i use very reliable sources for my information.

So don't take it personally if I call you an idiot, it's just my way of saying , thank you for making sure I get my facts straight.

Drivers drivers drivers. Techpowerup performance charts are not always up to date because they're not always using the latest review data, this is not their fault but amd's fault, for releasing drivers that give big performance gains.

They did made an article for every signifcant driver update though, they probably put the 12.11 driver performance gains in the chart you posted but it's impossible they put the  performance gains of the catalyst 13 driver in there because the pic of the article you posted shows the same differences as in the benchmarks of the catalyst 12.11 update.  Since most games they review have big performance gains in the catalyst 13 update, they couldn't have put it in there.

Tomshardware made articles about the driver updates too but since you love techpowerup so much i'll just give you the links of the techpowerup articles.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Catalyst_12.11_Performance/24.html

http://www.techpowerup.com/178939/AMD-Catalyst-13.1-WHQL-Drivers-Released.html

As you can see they're getting big percentages on both driver updates, most of these games are also used in the benchmarks.

Because of the driver updates the review from techradar is the most accurate (for the games they benchmark) because they use the latest driver update. And sadly for nvidia the 7870 xt even beats the gtx 670 in some cases. The hd 7950 get's overall better scores than the gtx 670 too.

Off course there are a lot of games to be played and the gtx 670 will probably still be the best card overall, but the differences in price with the hd 7950 and the hd 7870 xt are hard to defend, the price of the hd 7950 is even hard to defend if you see what a hd 7870 xt costs.

So I hope you can see that what i said was a lot closer to the truth than you think.;)

I wont join y'alls quote fest but I will just add that most sites I have read have come to the conclusion that the 7950 is on par with the 670 especially if you over clock. I personally have a gigabyte 7950 OC WF3. So I guess you can call me biased but when I was shopping for a card for my build it came down to three cards. The 7950, 7970, or the MSI 670 PE. At first I considered the 660ti but after a little research it was easily eliminated from the list. The 7950 is the same price and it easily outclasses it to the point that it just wouldn't make sense for me to buy a 660ti unless I had a huge boner for Nvidia. I eliminated the 7970 because with an over clock on the 7950 I could surpass it. So it came down to the MSI card or 7950. I went with the 7950 purely on price and over clocking potential. For $300 I got a card that right now I have running faster than a stock 670 or 7970. You just can't beat that deal. Now I know that the MSI 670 PE is basically as good as a 680 which is why I almost got it and its the card I would recommend for anyone who wanted to go nvidia (my friend has it and its awesome) but it just came down to price for me. Not that I couldn't afford it cause I could but I also like saving money even if its 80 bucks haha.

So yeah 7950>670 unless you are talking about top bin factory OC cards (i.e. MSI 670 PE). That is just what I gathered from all the research I did before I built my rig. Trust me I did a ton.

the conclusion is that the 7950 is the best card to get if you want to spend $300 and want a card that maxes games out.  There is nothing technical about this, the 7950 is just superior at this point.  The 7870 XT is also a GREAT card especially if you want to save some money.

Unfortunately none of nvidias cards are competitive performance per dollar this gen.  Last gen nvidia had the 570 and the 560ti, the gen before that the 460 gtx was god like.  This gen they literally have nothing on par except for the geforce 660.

I and most people here would highly recommend the OP to go for the 7950 if you want maximum performance (anything more is reaching a saturation point) and the 7870 XT if you want to save some $$

bingo. I think posted this here or in another thread but nvidia doesn't start making sense this gen until you get into the 670s and up. Only then does it begin to make sense to go green. In all honesty the best nvidia card for your money right now is probably the MSI 670 PE. Yes you can get a 7970 for the same price but some people just have to go green and I can respect that for whatever their reasons are. But for 390 you are getting a card that is essentially a 680. If you must go nvidia and want the most for your money as well as high performance that is the way to go imo. Or if you must go nvidia and want cheap bang for buck with adequate performance the 650ti isn't a bad look either. But yeah other than that get a 680.

I am flattered that you are arguing over a graphics card but the request stays the same.

On PC Case Gear, the Radeon 7970 is about $449. A bit less than the 670.

The 7950 is about $100 less at $349.

Should I go for the 7950 or the 7970?

If the 7970 is better, I don't mind spending the money. I have only ever had a Mac. Videogames were pretty much impossible for me. I have been waiting to play them for so long and I want my computer to perform to the best of its ability and if I have to spend a little more, then bring it on. I plan to play lots of graphic intensive games.

Give me a straight answer. I don't have much time left. Don't waste it. I have already waited long enough.

Thanks,

I have to say that I just read the review evil dead linked and I agree with something they mentioned, its something ive been saying for a while.

"Sadly, AMD has been making a rod for its own back. Despite having the best graphics cards of this generation, in terms of price/performance metrics, AMD is still ceding market share to Nvidia's GTX lineup. The public perception of flaky drivers and weak performance may no longer be true, but the extra marketing muscle behind Nvidia means it can still keep ahead in the game."

Im just hoping AMD gets sold to a bigger company that can compete marketting wise.  From my experience, its marketting that sells products, ie the reason COD MW sells arse loads even when its a mediocre game at best.  Its the reason why Apple is the biggest company in the world even though competitors products are usually half the cost and exceed the quality.  It is the reason why Samsung has crawled right up apples butt.  Im going to continue to support the underdog, not because im a good person or anything but because they give me whats the best value for my money.  Nvidia marketting is brainwashing alot of sheep

I am a big nvidia fan but I couldnt resist the price performance of the 7850. :)

The GTX 660 sounds good for a noob but its overclocking is absolutely limited, max OC vs max OC it loses any advantage to the 7850 so there was no point for me to pay more for it just because its nvidia.

Thankyou guys.

I think that I'll go for the 7970.

Hell I got my refurb GTX 670 for ~$330 shipped, and it looked brand new when I opened it up. Seems easier to just get the better card that's been around for awhile because there are a lot of refurbished and barely-used ones for sale if that sort of thing doesn't scare you. I was considering the 7950, but it was hard to justify because there are lot of cheaper 670s floating around the net. And after having been with AMD for my last 3 videocards, I'm tired of their software. :)

Really though the 7950 or the 7970 is a good choice at this point.

Haha, how did I know a simple 660 vs 670 thread with 4 pages had turned into AMD vs nVidia.

The GTX 660 isn't as decent as 670. You should get the GTX 670. It's the best card you can get for the most performance out of the money you spend. In other words, it's very good value.

And thankyou to evildead6789.

You, unlike most of the people in this forum, stuck to the question and didn't argue with everyone. :D

(Although you did call me a he. As if the name wasn't a give away  )

Well you did change your preference from nvidia to amd and you're asking now what card to get, the 7950 or 7970, which is good thing , it means you actually listened ;)

As for your question, i would pick the 7970 if it's on a good pcb, that means what 7970 is it. A reference card 7970 will be too noisy. If the 7950 is on a pcb with custom cooling i would say the hd 7950. So if you could only say what 7970 or 7950 it exactly is (like msi twin frozr, sapphire vapor x, asus direct cu II and so on...) then i could give you a nice and fullfilling answer :)

Gigabyte Radeon HD7970 GHz Edition 3GB

Gigabyte Radeon HD7970 Overclocked 3GB

Sapphire Radeon HD7970 3GB OC Edition with Boost

I would be willing to pay for any of them. Can you tell me which one is the best?

Thanks,

GamerGal13579

P.S. I liked the look of nVidia but if AMD cards are better then I'm not complaining. These ones look better than the nVidia cards in the same prce range.

go for the asus radeon hd 7970 directcu II top IT's a beast of a card, also in size, but it will run quiet even under load. It's also one that you can overclock the highest You can also choose the non top version. Not big a difference, the top version is just a bit higher factory overclocked. It's a three slot card though. The sapphire version is also very good (and silent), and uses only two slots, it's also cheaper. The directcu version of asus is better quality in the sense that it has better cooling, so it can overclock higher. Still the sapphire card is a very good deal though.

So the ASUS Radeon 7970 Direct CU Top it is then.

What does it mean by 3 slots? Does it take up 3 slots on the motherboard?

Will that do anything?

Thanks,

The only thing it will do is take a lot of place, that means when you look where the card goes into the motherboard, the next two slots beneath it you won't be able to put any card. If you're unsure about it you better take the sapphire version. Or maybe post your components of your pc now, then i can tell you if you will have enough room or not.
