I was just notified by NewEgg that the 480 is in stock. Before i pull the trigger...what would you do? Pounce on it like a cat on a mouse or avoid it like the plague?

I have no reason to buy one. I would be taking a step backwards from 5870 CF. It depends on the card you have now and if you are willing to put up with the negatives for the positives. If I still had my gtx 280 I would still go with a 5870 tbh.I was just notified by NewEgg that the 480 is in stock. Before i pull the trigger...what would you do? umm thats really up to question, but hey ill let u slip by without a lecture this time:P
but anyway its really up to you, i have no reason to get one seeing how my 260 still rins great on most games and if the 480 is as good as the 5870 on release date i cant wait what it would look like as it matures

What is up to question?wether the 480 is better or not, most benchmarks the 5870 wins but barely and as far as tesselation goes 480 destroys the 5870.
and as it matures you can bet that it will surpass the 5870
I would buy a 5870 now if I could...aka if I could merit spending money on a sweet, but not really needed upgrade :)

Yea I know that is up to question whether which is better. I have 5870 CF = 5870 in crossfire lol. Sorry should have not have been lazy and actually typed it out lol.Assuming that "if I could" means "I'm given enough money to afford a GTX 480 and possibly a new PSU if it's that power-hungry", then most likely yes, if only because my 8800 GT's getting a bit long in the tooth for my high framerate demands in new games.NamelessPlayerWell, i have a i7 920 cpu and a new 750 watt power supply and a little gtx260 for graphics...i need to set my cpu free with something high end.

now if i were smart i could have seen that, duh:P
but yes in your case a 480 would be a bad decision

(Heck, my PCP&C Silencer 610 could probably just handle a single GTX 480 in the system, but I don't know how comfortable I'd feel with almost maxing out the +12V rail.) But note that I have a preference for NVIDIA drivers, which naturally makes me lean a bit more toward their products. If ATI drivers work fine for you, then the HD 5870 could be a really compelling option. With a system like that, though, I'd wait it out before plunking down for a new graphics card, at least enough to see if GTX 480 gets any driver-related performance boosts to warrant all that heat output and power consumption.
I really don't see a need for me to buy a GTX480 when I've been enjoying more or less the same level of performance with my 5870 for the last 6 months with a lower power draw and heat output.. and for $100 less. No thanks.

Depends. It's surely a beast but it also produces a lot of heat and consumes a lot of electricity (your bills will be pretty high). A better alternative would be the 5970,5870 or even the 5850. It's too early for DX 11 and I highly doubt a lot of games released this year will tap into its potential right away.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with it. I had the chance to order one from Best Buy and I still passed it up for a 5850. The way I see it, none of the current DX11 cards are all that great for the one DX11 feature that actually interests me, Tessalation. Even the Nvidia cards take a sizable hit to their frame rate when it's on. If DX11 is what you're looking for I say wait a year until we have cards that can really use its features well without a significant performance decrease, not to mention some games that really take advantage of it. Until then I'm happy with a card that can run things silky smooth using DX 9 or 10.
I don't know why you just got an email now they went out of stock @ 5:28 EST according to now in stock. Bought mine today 7 mins after it was announced in stock. damstryou are right. i just got the email ment i just came home from work, the email probably came earlier in the day. It sold out quick. In a way i am glad.
When the 8800GTX was new, I did buy one of those - Expensive, high power demands and really quite enormous.
Would I repeat the experience again with a 480, given the opportunity? No. For the most part, you can get comparable performance with the alternatives from ATi with fewer drawbacks in terms of power and heat. It's one thing to upgrade your GPU, but to upgrade the PSU at the same time (which a reasonable number of people might have to do) is an optimistic assumption on the part of Nvidia, particularly when effiency is important these days. As a package, the 480's sums just don't add up.
Maybe in a year, ask the question again - maybe in a year Nvidia will have produced the card they should have released now.
i would if it met these requirements
1. alot less heat, and noise output.
2. they fixed that power problem.
3. actually had drivers out for it that will utilize it.
but seeing as how i have to wait for the revisions of the cards, for any of this..
the answer is going to be no.
besides ati lately has been showing me more, and more, that i shouldn't stick with nvidia...
ATI just seems way more logical, (and definitely evolving more with the times, than nvidia)
and no these are not fanboy remarks, lol im actually running an SLI system
Nah , if i had the Cash i rather go for 2 X 5870's or a single 5970 ... the GTX 480 runs like a jet engine and the price difference of it and 5970 is not really big. Plus in Singapore , Nvidia cards are generally more expensive than ATI cards (GTX 295 costs close to 1k SGD omg)

oh yeah thatd deter anyone from nvidia :P
I rather buy the best ATI card out there. Though i'm not a ATI fan, i just trust ATI much more. And... Red is my favorite color..
I bought one 2 days ago @ frys. It was so harsh to instal cause the cooling solution is huge so I had to move my sata connection to other slots. Not a big deal, just a pain in teh butt. Info for future owners! the card ran @ 50C idle and 78C fullload on air in my lian li case. Not bad at all! much better than my 8800gtx. Oh I use a single monitor solution.. 2 monitors and card is HAWT 93C full load! sooo keep that in mind. oh and its not that loud.. just as much as my 8800gtx, but less annoying. Worth every penny, it looks solid and to my eyes sexy.
I had to return.... cause hmm it didnt perfom well with my system.. My system is too old qq bottleneck ftl.. gosh lucky guy/gal that gets it for a discount.. lady put a sticker for $474.99 on it. trust me, i didnt want to return it, yesterday was such a bad day. I have never felt so bad for returning something in my entire life!
I'll wait a bit more till I save a couple of grand to give it a proper home. Hope refresher will be out by then. oH forgot, it was EVGA brand. wow hella nvidia haters.. the card is great! currently it performs better then any single gpu solution in the world. ppl that buy this card dont want it for low energy bill or to save the environment. gosh performance is what matters and the gtx 480 delivers.
