GTX770 or wait?

getting ready to buy a GTX 770 from amazon.... $349. not sure if i should wait... if the new line of cards is going to be out in the next few months, or just pull the trigger on a 770. i technically have enough to buy a GTX780, but... its an extra 170 dollars for 15% performance... it just doesnt seem worth it. i play at 1080p. anyhow, looking to get this:

Well, do the games you're playing right now look good enough for you? I think the most pertinent question is, are you having any frame rate issues? Although, it seems to me that a 570 could play most games with a reasonable amount of effects turned on.

The first Maxwell Gpu is out in 4 days (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti), the others wont be that far behind. 1 or 2 months max.

Where are you getting this only being 15% faster then a 570? Overall on average 770 at 1080 is over 30% faster then 570. With real directx 11 games the difference can much larger Crysis 3 1080 for example is big,

570:18 fps

770: 31 fps

BF3 is in the same boat .

47 vs 80 fps.

Question is if are there games now you cant run at the settings and performance you want? The Nvidia new Maxwell gpu lines wont come out until late spring to summer(GTX750 doesnot count). So its up to you if you can wait or not.

No the 750 750ti are an experiment a test and to fill the gpu line. The kelper 790 is tipped for release around March or April, and Nvidia ia also waiting on the 20nm manufacturing to be done. so dont expect the true new Maxwell line that proceed after the 700 line until very least late spring but most likely mid to late summer

because im pretty sure i never said that... like at all.

my mistake misread , if your target is only 1080 its not worth the 10-15% increase for $170. Now if you were planning to run games beyond 1080 then yes it could be worth it .

Waiting for another GPU line or not there'll be always something newer and better for your budget limit.

I can recommend the Asus 780 DCIIOC, it's quite worth it.

i'd probably upgrade if I were u. Could be a while till next gen nvidia cards come out. 770 should last for a good while at 1080p. I have a similar performance card with the 680gtx and game at 2560x1440 and have no problems with any games still.

I have the same card as you (you have a better cpu and double my ram as well lol) and feel no need at all to upgrade with the prices where they are. To each their own, I am waiting for the next line to come out and the 7XX's to drop. At that point I will do a complete overhaul. Not a money thing either, I could easily afford to build a top of the line system right now if I wanted to. I used to upgrade very often, was more habit than anything, I'm pretty content now and stay away from benchmarks lol.

Stock 780s come clocked extremely conservatively (whereas 770s are pretty high), a decent one is quite a bit better. I'd say it's worth it, but it's up to you.

Major differences between Kepler and Maxwell is the Compute Unit vs stream processor count.

Maxwell's CU (i.e. SMM) has 128 stream processors.

Kepler's CU (i.e. SMX) has 192 stream processors.

Benefits: Less stream processors per CU = less stress to CU's registers and caches = better GpGPU characteristics.

the real crux is how long a 770 will play games fairly close to maxed out.... i dont want to have to buy this card, and then turn around and get another new one in less than 2 years. i typically buy every other gen

Then you'll want to get the GTX780 or better.

Id wait... if my 570 had not blown out I would still have it! Just turn off AA and other framerate expensive settings that cant even be noticed for the moment. I have a 770 but also wanna upgrade to maxwell for some reason I jus feel they're gonna be really impressive

If you don't mind SLI, I'd say the 770 is an excellent choice. Mine has been an absolute champ so far.

Basically Maxwell will be 2x the performance per watt which means a 170w based Maxwell should be at least 2x faster then a 170w Kepler.

I would wait. You would be buying a graphics card that pretty much came out in 2012.

when you go from one architecture to another with the focus of better performance per watt along with die shrinkage. It will most likely happen. Look at Fermi GTX 560 to GTX 660ti nearly 2x performance and same TDP. And if the 750ti is a taste of whats to come we will see at least 2x performance per watt at 20nm.

We'll just have to wait and see Nvidias' high performance/high end GPUs.

It's pretty normal to upgrade GPUs every 2-3 years. GTX 770 is a pretty solid GPU. I don't think it would disappoint you but if you have a little extra $ then buy a 780 and your worries stop here for a while.

I don't like the term max settings because on most games you can get 90-95% of the eyecandy while getting 40-60% better frames than 100% eyecandy.

What I mean by that is there's almost always a poorly optimized setting or two or a setting that offers little eyecandy for a huge performance hit.

GTX 770 is a great GPU in terms of power (especially if you play at 1920x1200 or lower). Its a little faster than both the xboxone and ps4's GPU combined and most models can overclock to within 5% of a GTX 780 (where talking about some serious power here).

if you had the money would you get a GTX 780? or would you stick with the 770? or wait until the 8xx drop?

I would wait for 800 series due to a couple of reasons

1. Your ram and CPU is so far ahead of the consoles that it can last the entire generation. As a result you're literally a solid GPU upgrade away from being set for a long ass time

2. New game engines havn't really kicked in yet so there's not really any groundbreaking games visually that your missing. Most games are running on 2-4 year old engines which aren't groundbreaking and not very demanding.

3. GTX 570 SC is on par with an R9 270 (non-x) which is like a $180 (your GPU isn't bad and most games are running on old engines).

Given the above along with prices not really changing much recently (due to the AMD cards being inflated), I would wait for Maxwell which isn't that far off (its looking like Mid to late Summer).

And we don't know if they will use the GM104 for 880 and then GM100 for 980... Which is what they did with Kepler.. Meaning we won't see a fully fledged Maxwell gaming GPU before the 980 is released.

I'm still rocking my 460GTX and was looking at the 770 4GB too.

Problem is, I'm not sure how big of a upgrade it'll be.

I'm playing Titanfall right now with AA & Shadows DISABLED to get good framerates. The game seems to run fine at my reduced settings, but I'm wondering if now is a good time to upgrade?

I probably won't be playing anything on the PC except for Diablo3: RoS and Titanfall until Dark Souls 2 comes out for it too (whenever that is).

So, I'm not sure is I should upgrade now or wait.

$350 was my max budget for a new Video Card and the 770s are around that right now.

I upgraded from a GTX 560 to a 760 and seen in many games doubled if not more in performance. Going from a 460 to a 770 will be even larger.

I hope my 650Watt PSU can handle it. It recommends at least a 600Watt PSU, so I think I'm good. I'm only running it at 1080p, so it's not like I'm pushing massive resolutions.

So, now I got a 770GTX 4GB and a PS4. I think I'm set for Next-Gen. I hope. lol

Now I'm gonna try to sell off this old Overclocked 460GTX 1GB... eBay anyone?
