Unless you have a Dell or something, omfg I had to read how to on forums just to get that crap installed on my friend's pc, couldn't believe how hard it seems they try to not allow you to format.

Depends what model, but the one my friend had was a major pain. I had to scour the net for drivers to put on a disk just to detect a regular sata hdd in windows install, no raid or anything. Dell's site had no support for it, I found the solution in some random forum after googling the model number. There were other annoyances but I can't really remember specifically, I just know compared to any other pc I've ever installed an OS on, this was by far the most complicated process I've seen for a otherwise simple format.

Yeah, I had the same problem. But luckily I had other computers at home to download the drivers.

Hmm I'd have to call to know for certain, know it was a Dimension. I think he bought it around 2005 if you're familiar with what models they produced at the time.

Strange. I formatted my Dell a couple of months ago and it was fine. Make sure that you have the CD with all the Dell drivers and stuff on it. Restart and stick the Windows CD in. I cant quite remember but you get to a place where you can either reinstall windows or format the disk. Do this, the create a new partition using NTFS, and then just reinstall windows. Once you have put the Windows CD in and booted from it it just runs you through the whole process fine.

Yep, I just reformatted my dell 2 days ago, simply followed the on screen instructions after booting from my OS disc.
