If I had to choose between the two, I'd opt for GW2. After having played so many stale MMOs both free and P2P, I think I'm ready to take some risks. GW2 is trying to be unique and the MMO genre does need change. I remember feeling so indignant when I mentioned a particular mmo's way of storytelling; he said: "What? MMOs don't have stories. And they shouldn't strive to." Now is as good a time as any for MMOs to start incorporating the good storytelling techniques of single player RPGs.

Hopefully, GW2 will do just that AND a plethora of other things which have already been announced. It's not that TOR won't do that either, though.

Guild Wars 2: I am getting increasingly more hyped up for this game. Dynamic Events, detailed character creation, beautiful artyle, combining attacks and most importantly, seems to fix a huge issue I have with many modern RPGs, the holy trinity (something I consider a plague to gaming). Guild Wars 2 is one of my most hyped games, and this is something I am definately pre-ordering. With that said, it isnt my most hyped up mmo.

Star Wars The Old Republic: Mixed opinions on this one. On one day it looks to be a good levelling experience, the next day it looks like an uninspired WoW clone, that falls for many mistakes present in the industry, namely broken threat mechanics and for non boss fights, lack of teamwork.

Guild Wars 2 is the one I am looking forward to the most.

Edit: Here is why I hate the trilogy, in its current implementation.

that guy just sold me on guild wars 2, I am going to pre order it right now. I cannot express how much I want it right now, I feel like screaming for some reason.

ToR looks like it has decent content, but at the same time its combat looks DREADFUL and is the downfall of pretty much every MMO that isnt WoW.... It just looks horrible. Guild Wars 2 on the other hand looks much better allround.

I'd say Guild Wars 2 hands down. From what Ive seen so far SWTOR brings nothing new at all.

SilentSoprano

And GW2 does....?

This coming from a guy who is getting them BOTH Day 1...

Are you kidding me? If the videos and information NCSoft has released about Guild Wars 2 are any indication, GW2 will redefine the MMO genre. Combat itself looks way different from the typical MMO.

That being said, we won't know for sure how well Guild Wars 2 will live up to these claims until it is actually released or gets a beta.

It has a quest system like RIFT and WoW like combat with alittle more focus on moves. thats not revolutionizing anything... really.... as much as im looking foward to it, thier marketing hype is hilarious. Its a standard mmo with more focus on movement.

[QUOTE="mirgamer"]Graphics and gameplay feature wise, I would prefer Guild Wars 2. But I'm sick of fantasy MMOs and I need a short break for them. So TOR fits the bill nicely. TOR is just a temporary fix however. The real MMOs i'm waiting for are Firefall and Planetside.Maroxad

I am also sick of fantasy, but Star Wars is fantasy as well, Science Fantasy to be precise. However, GW2 looks to freshen up the formula, and that to me is more than enough for me to ignore the fantasy setting.

hehe Well u know what I'm referring to, I kinda like the idea of spaceships and laser guns. Not to mention the whole setting of Star Wars, with its politics, intrigues and stuffs. Plus its Bioware, so you can expect a excellent story telling from them from the single player/small coop portion. I'm aware that the gameplay mechanics is going to be largely the same but still, LAZER PEW PEW AND SPACE SHIPZ (even though its a tunnel run). Besides, TOR looks quite set to be released earlier than GW 2 so who knows? By the time GW2 launches, I may have had my share of TOR already and ready to move on. Nothing to lose.

Does Star Wars: TOR have a monthly fee? I do not do monthly fees.

FelipeInside

Then you will NOT be doing ToR I guess (yes, it will have monthly fees...)

I still don't see the big fuss about monthly fees....? or how people can't compare it to something like joining a gym...

A lot of people also refuse to pay to join a gym. Myself included.

Same here, why pay monthly for a gym when you can buy a elliptical or exercise bike (if you have the space) once and use it a home whenever you want. Same goes for GW2, I can buy it once and play it whenever I want and I am not restricted at the end of the month to renew anything.

Well if all you do when you go to the gym is an exercise bike thats fair enough, but those of us that Run, Bike, Weights and the various weights machines ... I cant fit that in my house.... so a £20 a month membership goes a long way. paying £9 a month for a game that always updates and gives you enough content to play longer than 10 normal games? well .... it would take ages to see a loss.

Darn, I wrote Trilogy instead of Trinity. Anyway, Alexredicilous makes excellent videos for GW2. Here are 2 others.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather choose the free "gym" that offers the exact same services (if not more) that the paid one does.

I don't do monthly fees because I got better stuff to do with my money than waste it on a game I already payed for once. As for the gym, I don't pay for that either. I work out at home. I don't understand why people waste money every month just to play a game. Got WAY too many games out there that don't have monthly fees for me to be picking games that do. Besides, why in hell would I want to pay to plat TOR when I can play something like Guild Wars 2 for free?

You guys still DON'T get it do you. Fair enough with the gym example... you can always buy an exercise bike.... but what about specific training sessions... - How about swimming pools? are you gonna buy a swimming pool for your house or pay membership so you can swim? - How about sports clubs? are you going to pay membership so you can play in a team or just play by yourself at home? - How about other types of clubes? It's all about paying for a service and getting the most out of it....

But when it comes to video games, if i enjoy myself just as much if not more with a game that is pay once than a game with subscription, i will pay for the one time fee.

It isn't always about the amount of content, but the quality of the content.

Take Demon's souls for example. That game really didn't have much content. 5 worlds, about 3 parts each. Fairly linear, average amount of spells/miracles, average amount of armor and weapons, and a lackluster story. However the combat in the game was tons of fun and kept me (and many others) playing the gamefor 150+ hours.

Take a game like sacred 2. A GIANT map, tons of loot, tons of spells with different pathways, different classes to choose from, plenty of different builds, mounts, etc. The game had so many things, but it just wasn't that good imo. I played through the campaign and killed EVERY single Boss fight in the world, but most of the game felt like a chore. I love both of the genres of games, but i felt demons souls just executed what it had better than sacred.

Just because ToR might have more content, doesn't mean its going to be the better game.

Yes of course... but same way around. Just because a game ISN'T subscription based doesn't mean it's going to be a BAD game. The best thing imo about MMOs is that you get to play with friends and live as another character/creature in another world. It's not always about the content... sometimes it's about the social aspects and dynamic events. Something Single Player games can't do....

It won't be bad but it puts a lot of people off. Having to pay for entry to something once already puts the pirates off and paying again puts off a lot of people who would willingly purchase something once.

I can play with my friends in other games that we all buy once so what makes p2p MMOs different?

Yes, it does put some people off. I WAS ONE OF THEM. Before I started WoW I said I would NEVER pay x month for a game. But then once I found how much content, how much fun and playing with friends was I believe it was worth it. There will always be people who won't do it... and that's fine, but the comparison of signing up for a soccer team (paying the sign up fee = buying the game) and then playing every weekend (paying fees = monthly fees) is VALID. But I don't see so many people complaining about those fees...? As for P2P.... apart from GW I have yet to come across a FREE MMO which has the same standard as something like WoW or LOTRO. Indeed, LOTRO has gone F2P, but remember it was created/started as a subscription based game. Remember another thing.... it costs money to maintain an MMO, specially when it has constant content upgrades.

I'm a huge SW fan, so Old Republic gets my vote. That being said, it's possible I'll buy both at some point or another.

Guild Wars 2 all the way.

SWTOR is an insult to anyone over 14 years old.
