this is ment to set the tone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8XIW_jUa-k

the final guildwars 2 profession is here... the guardian!

the guardian is if you will a paladin.. however unlike the familar profession the paladin lacks the abilites to heal others.. and he has few spells to heal himself.. rather he has damage reduction and health regen abilities. his primary skills are 4 aura's(3 + no aura) each with their own pro's and cons. justice deals damage to an attacker for every fifth blow landed on you. resolve gives you hp regen and the last one courage raises your armor via the aegis spell.. which by no mean foreign to those who play guildwars 1's monk.

what makes these aura's or virtue's as they call them different from the paladin of say WoW or other games is that he can choose to gift them to others.. or hog them for himself. he can give everyone else in his party courage for example.. put then doesnt get the buff himself.

he also wields the awesome powers that ritualist players know to well.. spirit weapons. he has in his arsenal such spells as weapon of warding, weapon of quickening, weapon of destruction.

now if he chooses to use these weapons by nature he gets benefits from them by giving them to others or they are more powerful if he uses them on himself.

playing a guardian means having to decide between the good of the party or saving your own skin.

no mesmer? big-time bummer, well hopefully one of these is similar.

These guys are probably similar to Diablo 2's Paladins

Indeed from the description he sounds more like a support player. I have played a Paladin in every RPG/MMO game I got my hands on, and it seems inevitable I will be drawn to the Guardian :P

very interesting. man i love Anet. the look at the rule book and say "ok lets not do that". keep going you crazy legends \o/. i have a monk in GW and i find using them as healers to be very boring. very important and necessary (man were monks in demand in GW) but boring. i tried to make her a fighting monk with mixed results. getting rid of them solves 2 problems. boring healing (though some may like it) and groups waiting for monks before they could go on a mission. thunderhead keep or something in GW was a famous choke point for progress due to a lack of monks.

mmm

actually the monk has gotten quite versatile of late.. i normally AB as an Ele monk running heals and i can (on a good day) out heal resto rits and some of the lower end monks.

jade quarry mostly but i also do fort aspenwood now n again

no one truly see's an ele healer coming.. they run in fear of fire/ice or rock.. but the second i pop heals its normally too late..

ive also started experimenting with a rit/monk smite build with mixed results..

its been ages since i have played GW. whats AB? an ele/monk is clever....plenty of magic in the tank and running away from an ele is generally the right thing to do...unless your a good sin or mesmer :P. im more of a PVE guy myself though..the PVP side of GW doesnt really interest me.

They can't not a have Mesmer. There are still three more professions left to announce. They have to have the Mesmer.

On the + side they don't have anything like a Mesmer announced yet......so that void may be filled by one ;)

I imagine Asuran mesmers will be among the best

Anyone else not only impressed by its visuals/animations but that sound design as well? I can hear the bass ripping through my apartment floor - which is carpet.... I was expecting a class similar to this.. moreso some cleric that combat abilities. I'll still be going ele though or a ranger - I just like the edge of viewing the entire battlefield and that sense of vulnerability - alot of fun to play.

Perhaps you were thinking of races rather than professions, as there are five of those?

Anyway, I've never been a big fan of paladin-like classes, but this one really has me intrigued. The heavy armour and versatile buffs are cool and everything, but what I'm interested in are the glyphs and the spirit weapons - this might just be the closest profession to a ritualist in Guild Wars 2.

Either way, it's certainly raising my hopes for the final three professions.
