Ok, I've been saving for a while now. I want a laptop for college... but I want to to play games also ;) I would like a 17", if possible. I'll have about £800 by the end of July... but if I get good grades in my exams, I may be able to boost it up to £1000.

So, can you please recommend me some laptops around the £800 marker? I like to play pretty much all games, but I guess the main one this would be used for is WoW. But I would probably use it as a mobile PC to take around friend's houses also, so FPS's are to be played on it.

If necessary, I can go up to £1000. But, preferably under.

 Thanks in advance.

your not going to get a top of the line laptop that can play all games high. however i think you can get a pretty good rig to play WOW. yeah we need a conversion to help pick a laptop.

True... but I'd need the links to be from UK shops... And the prices aren't exactly conversions... It would be about ~$2000

But, I think it'll only be worth about $1500 because of the higher prices over here in the UK ^_^

I was looking in to an Inspiron, I could get it with a 7900 go... but they don't seem to offer that option anymore :(

The XPS line starts off at over a grand, so I can't really go for them....

Since you posted a budget in pounds, i'm assuming you're british.

You talked about going to college, is this what Americans would call college or what British people would call college?

^_^ Yeah I'm in the UK. UK College, i.e. from 16 - 18. But I also want a laptop for portability (when I go over a friends, I won't have to lug monitor and computer)

Thanks for any input so far. I've got to head off now, exams tomorrow *dies*

If you'd be kind enough to supply links in my absence, I'd be very grateful.

Your budget is in the mid-range laptop area. You can play W.O.W. easily, but the latest F.P.S. are going to have to be on low settings if that even.roulettethedog

Yeah, I'm not looking for anything TOO high end. I want something that can play WoW really nicely. Maybe then some CSS, perhaps a little Oblivion (I don't mind turning aettings down :P)

I found a nice Dell, it had a T7200. a gig of RAM, 17", w/ a 7900 go. I was probably going to get that one. But they've stopped offering that GPU with the Inspiron 9400 line now :(

I'm not sure about the size difference between a 15.4" and a 17"? I guess it's probably the resolution more...

Any recomendations for either? I'd prefer the 17" ^_^

heres a list of plces you could try:

http://www.vadim.co.uk/Custom+PCs/Gaming+Laptops best of the best in britain

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs good prices if you want the full package however it is dell (not so much a problem for laptops)

if you do not know the problem with dells its that when you look down at your gaming PC you fell slightly ashamed and embarresed with that case and that word on the front DELL

http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/r05/ri05.asp nice cases but only 15.4" screens and apparently bad customer support

http://www.computerplanet.co.uk/laptops/asus/ there's a bunch here but all have 15.4 screens

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/asp/education-laptops.asp they might do laptops what do you think?

http://www.rockdirect.co.uk/ specialize in high performance laptops

There are probably many more places you could try but these were the first to come up on google and should give you a good selection plus there all in britain

Yeah but the Inspiron E1705 is American... It's the US equivilant (which conveniently enough has the 7900 GO option still)

I have found a really nice - well under budget one... How is the X1700 mobility?

http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=Asus_Laptop_F3Jp-AP063C

I'd most likely buy a 2 GB set of 667 RAM for about £50, then Ebay the 1024 stick that came with it...

The only thing is that it's only a 15.4"... But, for the price, I'd be happy I think ^_^ Opinions please?

Thankyous!

Wait a couple of months, ATI has thier 2000 series (DX10) mobile cards coming out now, so I'd wait until those are out before I start doing any serious shopping. Plus I'm sure nvidia will have their 8000 series go cards coming out soon as well.

What sort of series are going to be equivilant to the X1700? And how good is this X1700?
