I own them both and they are equally great games. Far Cry has the edge for the big maps and nice jungle environments. Far Cry looks great and the AI is decent. Half-Life 2 is more interactive with the gravity gun, but the environments aren't that expansive. Half-Life 2 had great level design same with Far Cry. Overall for me I have to call it a tie.
i'd say half life 2 for sure - while the gunplay is simple (yet fun), there is so much diversity and variety in the game, the focus is constantly changing... from the initial 1984-style police state feel (which was a perfect introduction) to a desperate unarmed escape from the combine, to falling into a cool, collected rhythm of fun firefights, to speeding down a waterway in a hovercraft to creeping through a spooky, horror-movie style zombie town, to leading a team of giant insects on a storm on a prison to crazy rooftop firefights against war-of-the-worlds style walkers -- that's the genius of half life 2, the game is constantly changing, always throwing new gameplay focus at you, instead of simply throwing new settings at you - so the game never stagnates...
farcry was good in many ways - the technology was astounding, the gunplay was fun - and the realtive degree of freedom was refreshing (though the game is pretty linear on the whole), but i found the voice acting to be frustrating, the plot (if you can call it a plot) was frustrating and annoying and once we get to the mutant stage, the whole game fell apart for me
both games are really good in their own way, but i would put half life 2 amongst the very best first person shooters ever made - farcry, though, i would not
Far Cry is a great open game, you can approach objectives using different tactics, stealh, sniping, agression all viable tactics. There are some indoor environments which are more linear but it really shines in the jungle. HL2 is just a superb experience, incredibly linear because that's how it creates such an experience.
It's hard to go past HL2 because it's such an awesome experience but I don't think I'd be extremely sad if I could only play Far Cry. The AI is a lot better in Far Cry but things like characters and pacing are much better with HL2. You can't go wrong with either imo.
I've been with Valve since the beginning, so I'm gonna have to refer you to Half Life 2. There really isn't quite anything like it.
It plays good, it looks good, it FEELS good.
I often just open Half Life 2 up and run through Ravenholm or Nova Prospekt, even though I know the levels by heart and know exactly what is coming around the corner, i still find it a fun and engaging experience each time through. Even now, two years (maybe three) after I purchased Half Life 2, I'm still finding new secrets, easter eggs, or ammo caches.
Half Life 2's sound is also great, adding excellent, believable atmosphere to the game. When not in combat, Civil Protection will go about on patrols, communicating with each other and Overwatch. Who could forget a memorable Overwatch broadcast that went, "Reminder: 100 sterilized credits qualifies for non-mechanical reproduction simulation." There are hundreds of sentances that NPCs can recite and several hundred phrases that can be strung together to add even more diversity to the game.
The physics are also great fun. I often find myself building mini-forts out of boxs, desks, furniture, whatever is laying around. Even when I know that there is only gonna be a single CP or zombie coming through a door. And nothing is more rewarding then grav gunning a CP's grenade and sending it flying back at them. Valve will often break up an action sequence with some sort of physics puzzle, an early example being where the player has to get over a high wall by stacking cinder blocks on a wooden board postioned on a concrete pip in a seesaw-like fashion, causing the board to fall and create a ramp over the wall.
It is rare for a game as old as Half life 2 to still set the standard for what games in a genre look like, but Half Life 2 does just that. Even today, game reviewers often compare an upcoming FPS's graphics with those of Half Life 2, with the most recent example being S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. NPC's in Half Life 2 have complex, dynamic facial expressions that will change with their surroundings. If a small group of rebels is trapped in a cramped, dark hallway their facial expressions will be decidedly more anxious then if they were outside in broad daylight. Speaking of outside, Half Life 2 sports some excellently rendered outdoor levels, with the soft orange hues of the Water Hazard chapter creating a false sense of peace before the player enters the stark horror of Ravenholm, with it's zombified citizens and abandoned apartments. Half Life 2 was designed to look good no matter what system it is being run on. I have a relatively horrible computer, "The Clunker". It has a Celeron, 256 RAM, and an ATI Radeon 1250. I can run Half Life 2 on medium high visuals and maintain constant framerates between 20-40 frames per second. I recently upgraded to 3/4ths a gigabyte of RAM and can run Half Life 2 with maximum visuals, to this day I have never had any hitches.
Half Life 2 has excellent gameplay. Valve has done an excellent job of spoiling the player with unique combat sequences, while providing just the right amount of puzzle-solving to keep the combat from becoming tedious. Right as the player begins to feel that an area is becoming boring, Valve introduces a new concept. During Our Benefactors, the player is inside the citadel fighting the combine. There are large numbers of combine, and just as the fights begin to get boring, Valve takes the player's weapons away and gives them a new toy that most players agree is much better than all the rest. Without spoiling the storyline, this weapon makes the physics that much more enjoyable.
Valve has made the perfect blend of action, puzzles, and story while at the same time creating a rich, believable world that looks and sounds good. With the release of Half Life 2 Valve has upheld their reputation as excellent game designers.
Half Life 2 has truly raised the bar.
Half Life 2 is a awesome & challenging game.
Far Cry is a sort of easyish, when u get used to what u know what & when its coming.
HALF LIFE 2 for me.
Fary Cry for now.
If you've never owned/played HalfeLife2, I'd suggest waiting on the Orange Box package coming out late this year, to get the whole HL2 collection in one go.
And besides, my WalMarts also carry the full edition of FarCry for a measly $10 now, Ubisoft likes to repackage older successful titles on DVDs (if it was a multi-disc title, wihch FarCry was) in a jewel-case package that's dirt-cheap. So there's really no excuse as to why you couldn't get both money-wise if you decide you need to get HL2 *now*.
I personally enjoyed Half Life 2 way more.
But besides everyone's opinions, let's take my personal thoughts on the subject in a hopefully neutral way.
Far Cry is cheap. You can get gametap for super cheap, play tons of good games, and also get Far Cry.. But no multiplayer. You can probably buy the full version with multiplayer for very cheap, too.
But! Far Cry was accepted kinda weird. Some people absolutely loved it, and some people couldn't stand it or see anything at all remotely good about this game. So if you get this game, you run the fairly high risk of not enjoying it quite as much. Half Life 2, however.. Has tons of mods, great multiplayer, Steam which has it's own pros and cons, and even though it's very rare for someone to dislike Half Life 2, even if you somehow did.. There's so many mods you're sure to find at least one you'd love.
Half Life 2 just sounds like the better choice if you're to only pick one
for me it mostly depends on my mood:
Half-Life 2: fast, action-packed and no need for precise aiming... so when i'm in a more destructive mood i prefer this.
Far-Cry: slow-paced, need for concentration and precise aiming... when i feel up to a challenge i play this.
So i would chooses:
HALF-LIFE2!!!!!!
Half-Life 2. It was the first time that I played a game that pulled me in with it's cinematic presentation without using cutscenes. The AI of the characters is still topnotch to this day. Also the facial animations are absolutely amazing.
Far Cry is a great game, but it can't even touch the brilliance of HL2 imo.
You should definitely check out Half-Life 2. It is a experience you won't forget and after that you should also play Half-Life 2: Episode One to continue the experience! A true masterpiece. Over 35 game of the year awards!
Far Cry is also a superb game! You should really play both of these games. Although, in my opinion if I had to choose which I like better as a FPS then it would be Half-Life 2.
But you should try both games and if you haven't already, you need to also try F.E.A.R. and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernoybl as they are one of the great FPS on PC as well!
Half Life 2.
Even the graphics today are astounding. I just bought it a month ago and I am still impressed by the graphics, even though they're three years old. The storyline is amazing and the whole game does a great job of immersing you in the experience. For Far Cry, I haven't played enough to know, but the storyline doesn't seem as compelling, and even though the graphics are great, you pretty much need a new computer to play it.
Half life 2. hated far cry. Most overrated game ever.ForlornHope
Far Cry, hated half life 2. Most overrated game ever. Well thats what I think:)
Half-Life 2 all the way. I aminly got it for the storyline, adn you should too. It really pulls you in and the atmosphere is just amazing. NOthing like leading a bunch of rebels on an assualt against the combine :)
