If you haven't had a chance to play the Half-Life series and you've been itching to do so, Steam is having a sale. The entire series is $9.99 or you can buy an individual game for about $2.49. Sale is good for two days!

Sales

What a great deal even though most of us "regular" PC gamers have the series. Anyone new to PC gaming should grab this up.

What's Half-Life?  I'm so glad Steam has these weekly sales to bring some attention to all of these little known franchises and games.

So I've never played HL1. So I'll ask the all important question: should I buy HL1 original or HL1 Source? And yes, only one not both.

I've played the HL2 demo and enjoyed it. I was going to buy it during this summer sale, but I doubt it will be any cheaper than it is now. So if I've never played anything but the demo, what do you recommend I do? Buy the whole series and play through in order? Or would I be fine buying HL2 on it's own?

You can just skip HL1. You can go back to it if you really want to, it doesnt mess with the story of 2 too much.

I would buy the whole series. Play HL1 via the Black Mesa Source mod (they essentially recreated HL1 in the HL2/Source engine). Then play the HL2 series in order. You're in for a treat!

  • July 12, 2012 (Thursday)

It could be Jully 11th, or it could be July 18th. They seem to be moving it up "one-two weeks" from every year.

Is the Black Mesa mod already finished? They seem to be doing it forever.

It isn't finished yet, but they released whatever they have done so far. The new visuals look pretty nice.

I think there's a better chance of it starting this Thursday rather than last. I highly doubted they would start it on a holiday. Either this Thursday or next will be the sale.

Summer sale-related TF2 items and Steam trading cards have already started appearing, so the sale will definitely be on soon. Given the HL2 sale's weird end time, I think the sale will start tomorrow.

What exactly is the order? It's confusing. There's Half Life, Half Life this, Half Life that, then HL2, HL2 Episode One and Episode Two. I just don't get what's different or if playing the other will matter.

Either way, I'll buy HL complete tomorrow. It's only $10, and I've been wanting to play the game and don't want to regret not getting the expansions later.

I'd play them in the order of release. But play Half-Life: Source instead of the original or Black Mesa - it's the best version of the game, without any interference from modders. So that's Half-Life Source, then (if you want to play the side-games) Opposing Force and possibly Blue Shift, then Half Life 2, Episode 1, and Episode 2.

Opposing Force was ok, didnt really add much to the series aside from some cool weapons imo. Blue Shift you can just skip entirely. Really short and not much happens.

This Thursday is a good guess because the HL2 sale ends at 10AM, not 4PM, and Steam updates new sales at 10AM.  Also, crafting badges now gets you Mysterious Cards and so a lot of people now think those are going to tie into the Steam Summer Sale in some form or another.

... No play Black Mesa Source.. Black Mesa is superior and doesn't deviate from Half-Life 1 much..

Except Black Mesa Source isn't complete, it's missing like 1/5 of the game (the final act in Xen).

Looks like this week, the end time for the midweek deals is 10am Thursday and normally its 4pm that day (usually when the sale ends early on a midweek or weekend madness deals that is a sign of a sale is about to start. That is my science behind it anyway, but it could be out.

Download Source SDK Base 2007 for free from Steam, and play Black Mesa.
