I would say Half Life 2. I am playing this gamend I think it's brilliant. It has improved a lot over Half Life.

I liked Half Life as well, but technically and gameplay wise it's no where near.

If you look at the impact they made at the time, then definately HL.

But 3 years on from HL2 and 9 years from HL I have to say that based on gameplay and everything, HL2 is the obvious winner because it uses new technology to best effect, has the gravity gun and better ai and better characters, as well as some nice large battles with allies. If I had a choice to play HL or HL2 right now, I'd choose HL2.

HL2 is clearly a better game, but that is because it has 6 years extra technology under it's belt, as well as more money for development and of course it could improve on everything good in HL and get rid of all the rubbish bits in HL.

HL2 because it has Alyx Vance in it, is that creepy of me to use as a reason for my choice?

Half Life. It was simply great, every moment of it. HL2 wasn't at all like that. I thought HL2 was pretty bland overal.

I played HL in 1999, and HL2 on december 2004. And I gotta choose HL2 over HL, cause it got variations in gameplay. And the story is far more better than HL.

And yeah, I'm a HL series fan.

Wow! I can't believe HL lost! This forum is full of people who like graphs -.- .

First for the ones who say that the HL2 graphs, characters, engine, and stuff is better than in HL ... of Course it is! , but would you think on the release date first?!? please take that in count for your choice if you choose HL2 it is because you didn't play HL back in the 1998 wich was totally insane with more tha 50 game of the year awards and an award for the greatest game ever!(not saying that it is,but actually it has to be incredible to win that award).

Second when you says gameplay is better in HL2... I doubt if you know what gameplay is.. HL is game from the 1998 wich stills give as fun as HL2 wich came out in 2004, and hell thats an achievement!.

For the last the fact of saying that HL2 had more impact than HL for the FPS genre is totally ridiculous, but seriously RIDICULOUS, the impact of HL was as impressive as doom's impact back in 1993, although it is the example of a revolutionary step for a genre. HL2 is a great game truely one of the best FPS I've played and it is true it did has it's impact when it came out it was innovative new and a bit revolutionary maybe... but don't compare it with the revolution HL created ... NEVER, there's is not gona be any other revolution like that for the genre ever again, it happened with doom it happened with HL and it was over.

So please, take all factor in count when you vote in this poll because the result is sadly false ..

Half-life, purely because its story was so much better than HL2's. Graphically, both were the pinnacle of the genre when released. The action was intense in both, just a bit more in HL.

DarkRecruit

How can you like HL1's story more? Seriously, nothing happened in it story wise. The xen invade and then you spend 10 hours in Black mesa trying to get out. HL2 has a ton of stuff happening.

I think what people mean is the execution of the story and the originality at the time. In hl1 youFEEL like your suddenly in the middle of a world of sh1t and as you progress things get worse around you and your just trying to stay alive. I remember squintingwhen i came up to the surface again for the first time in the game. It was that good.

If you wanna boil down everything, you could say you spendall of hl2 going after the combine citadel. You see it at the start, know your going after it to blow it up, spendthe game getting there. As for events, hl1 had the phases of seeing scientists dead and dying, marines arriving and wiping out survivors, then aliens against marines then you. YOu had the huge boss fights, varied areas, plus you launch a space rocket, then go a version of hell at the end and fight a giant baby. You actually do quite alot.

HL1 is the best by the way.

If they had fixed that damn sticking elevator problem I would have voted for Half Life. But I never beat the game cuz on the second puzzle chamber when fighting Nihilanth, the small elevator stones stuck again and I had enough by then.

But Half Life was fun while it ran without bugs. Surface Tension was definitely my favorite "level" in gaming ever.

Noldorin2646

I hear that! I thought it was just me, "surface tension"is my fave level of all time to :)

OMG why is this thread even here?

Its like comparing Friends Season 1 to Friends Season 10.
Like comparing Marioland to SuperMarioland.

HL 1 Will have nostalgia, "the firsts", and moments, effects and certain gameplay moments everyone yearns for in HL2,
and HL2 will be the otherway round.

WHY?!

WHY?!

WHHHHHYYYYYY!!!!?!!!

i thinkboth games are masterpieces almost beyong comparison - just to get that out there

as for which is better, that's a very hard call

half life 1 did things that the genre has never done before, things that computer games as a whole had never done before - half life had utterly amazing ai, very fun gunplay - a simple but engaging story and some amazingly original and often cinematic set pieces

half life 2 i don't really think of as a fps, it has guns and is first person, sure, but i never really felt like the focus of the game was its gunplay, but rather on putting the player in radically different scenarios with plenty of set pieces... and it did this incredibly well, the game was constantly throwing new things at the player, so it was almost never boring in the way that a generic run n gun fps may stagnate throughout the game

this resulted in weaker gunplay, for which the game has been harshly criticised - but on the whole i don't think the standard of gunplay, or ai, is a detriment to the overall quality of the game

both games are simply magnificent, and half life deserves big plus points for being the first - but there's something to be said for being the second as well... can you imagine how hard it must be to follow up one masterpiece with another masterpiece? so many deverlopers would say okay, half life worked, let's just do it again and half life 2 could've ended up being like opposing forces or blue shift

that valve went back to the drawing board and made a totally new game, a game that lived up to its predecessor and was able to stand alone as half life 2 rather than the sequel to half life impresses me every time i think about it

half life 2 is also powered by an utterly masterful engine which looked awesome in 2004, and - having just played some more ep2 - looks just as awesome today (those shadows, ohh!)

really, it's a difficult comparison - but i think i'd put half life 2 above half life... its willingness to put the player in constantly-shifting situations where no two fifteen minute segments feel alike really just makes half life 2 stand head and shoulders above its predecessor for me, plus the fact that the engine is utterly magnificent and made awesome and creative use of physics, plus the simple fact that the game is far, far more than just half life done again in a slightly different way

i think it goes without saying that half life is the more important game, and has had a profound impact on the industry in a way that few games ever did before - and debatably no game ever will again, but i'd say half life 2 is the better game

Half Life 1 was awesome. I remember watching my dad play, as he is running from Commandos inside a warehouse, while an old scientist follows you and you get ambushed and then shoot the soldiers while they are fending off the alien and then you smash the Giant Baby Boss in the brain with your almighty crowbar.

Plus, the enemies in Half Life 2 sucked. you fight a stupid soldier who doesn't run from a glowing red greande, and runs towards you and you blow his brains off with a shotgun. Plus, theres no bosses unless you count that lame antlion, circle strafe then toss barrels at it.

HL1 had commandos which were Hella tough to kill and were smart, and you fought badass aliens, like the Vorigaunts, Bullsquids, and Alien Controllers, and those Gigantic Grunts!

Half Life 2 hands down. I have not played Half Life 1 because I only had a Windows 95 back then and could barely run Diablo and Starcraft I also played Wolfensteain 3D and Blake Stone. But Half Life 2 had good puzzles with the gravity gun but for its time Half Life was a masterpiece.

I played both games within 3 months from release date. HL1 was good but I couldn't stop thinking "Aliens rip off." And I got tired of shooting at head crabs, bug like aliens and giant slugs. HL2 engaged me more into the story and was just much more fun to play. Also the colorful alien world (last level in HL1) seemed a little too far out.
