Microwave, and if possible a shredder.

open it, take platters, burn them, recycle the rest.

You guys on here are just totally out of touch with reality. Just hit the bloody thing with a hammer, it doesent need shredding unless its from a business or from the MoD.

Phillips head screw driver

Sledge hammer

Have one of your friends hold the screw driver on the hard drive while you hit it with a sledge hammer. Record yourself doing this and post it online if an accident happens.

At work if the drive still works we'll use a software wiping solution such as DBAN, Active@Killdisk, or Wipedrive. On the other hand if the drive is faulty a diamond tipped drill, through the case, and shattering the platters is our way of killing a drive.

If it's clicking then it's not usable, but drilling through it a few times will make that permanent. Smashing it with a hammer would be fun though

Hence why I said microwave...

Hammer won't work, I tried running over a HDD with a car, and it still worked, it was one of those 700MB which I had no use for.

ok so you really want to make sure that the data on yourhard drive is gone forever?

follow these 3steps carfully

1.make sure the hard drive is completly encased in duct tape,{dont want any little peices getting loose.}now tape thehard drive to a telephone pole.get into a vehicle and ram into the telephone pole at exactly 73mph.after you get out of the hospital, cut your duct taped hard drive from the remains of the telephone pole.now if you have done everything right it should kind of feel like a stiffhak e sac at this time.

2.take your new duct tape/hard drive/hak e sac to the nearest parking lot and spend a hour rolling over it with somthing heavy{preferably a steamroller} while enchanting it with curses from the advanced d&d dungeon master hand book vol4.now scrape up the remains with a shovel, carful not to touch it,{dont want to set off any of those nasty curses}and put the remains in a burlap sac soaked in gas for 3 days.light it and let it burn for 2 hours.

3.now comes the hard part.sweep the ahes into a steel container.then you must infiltrate nasa and secure the remains in the next thing they decide to send into space.then you must reprogram said transportation to send itself into the nearest black hole.

it might be a bit of overkill but you can be sure that data is gone and have the added bonus of being considered"green" for not polluting the earth with another hard drive.

Where would I drill through it? Also, does anyone know if submerging it in water will work?

it wont explode or anything, it will just spark a couple times, release a weird smell, and get warm but nothing else. But it will be completely unsalvageable for the data.

Regular water won't do much, it ruins it, but data can be salvaged, pour some salt in there or some dirt and leave it overnight.

No, submerging in water won't work. The platters are where the data is stored, the round disks, that's where all the data is. Just break those up, that's it. No oe is going to try hard enough to recover the fragments unless the CIA is after you or something.

I have heard that the easiest effective way to destroy a HDD and making sure the information is not salvageable is to drill 3 hole through the HDD. That should make it next to impossible to get any information off of the disc, no matter what method used.

So hitting the hard drive very hard won't work? So by drilling three holes through the platter, it should be as good as dead right?

Smashing it will work for 99.9% of the people trying to get the data off. But if you were someone that the government thought was a terrorist or something they could take the platters out and get the data off.

Hitting it with a hammer will break the bearings so if you plug it in it wont work....the ohly way someone could get your data off is by spending a LOT of time and cash to repair it.....and why would they.

Water won't do much. The data is stored magnetically on platters.

For drilling you want the drill to pass through the platters destroying them in the process. If the platter is destroyed then there is no possible way to recover data from it. The area that has been drilled will be little more than dust.

Hitting with a hammer would work by applying a lot of force through a small area and having a shattering effect on the platters.

Wiping a magnet over the platters would also be effective at destroying the data, making it impossible to recover.

Not the most reliable unless you have access to a physics' department's magnets. A drill is the best method, chisels work well too.

Just in case any of you were under the impression of my drive being big:
