I hve a 320gb sata hdd and i just bought a new 500gb sata hdd. I didnt want to raid the hdds but i wanted to have another drive on my pc to move large files to. I wasn't really sure how to do it so i looked around online and followed some instructions. I put my windows xp disk in and partitioned the new drive. It also installed windows xp on that drive too. So now when I start windows up it asks me which windows xp do i want to load. Can anyone give me instructions to clear xp off of my new hdd and just use it for more space on my current xp hdd.Â
Simplest way is to go to My Computer, right-click on the 500gb hard drive and select the format option. Name it what you want in the Volume Label box, and since you already formatted it you can check the quick format box so its much faster. After that it will just be a storage drive. Just make sure you're running the OS off the original hdd when attempting this.

Boot from your OLD hard drive. Go into the system management ("Start" > "Run" > "diskmgmt.msc") and select the new hard drive. Right click and select "Format." That will erase ALL files on the new hard drive, but this will allow you to use the new drive as storage.
It should be in the same order as the one you use in the boot menu and double check to make sure the partition number and rdisk etc are right. I'd also make sure on default= the partition, rdisk etc matches where \Windows is located so that should be the same. This page explains it better http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000492.htm If you pick the wrong one you'll have to pop in your XP disk and go to recovery console. In the console type FIXMBR that should put things back if you were to pick the wrong one.
