Go to bios and make sure you have your hard drive listed in the hardware section. You should consult your motherboard manual and re-check the steps because Windows will try 99% of the time to find a hard drive hooked up.

there arent drivers for hard drives. they need to be formatted for NTFS for windows to recognise them and a usable hard drive. the windows IDE controllers could be considered drivers but there installed with the os automatically

only thing i can say is hopefully you have or know someone with another pc with an ide slot you can use and format your hdd there through windowsand then try again. idk what to tell you other wise

to format right click on my computer in start menu, click manage then go to disk management, from there select the new hdd and format it and follow the wizard and format it to NTFS after its done should be recocnizable to windows and usable

Your harddrives may be defective if windows can't recognize them to format them.

why does it have to be ide why not sata...since its a sata drive

basketcase14240

Yeah just find someone who can connect them to sata connections.

unless you're running RAID then you won't need drivers, just make sure it's detected in bios, otherwise you don't have it plugged in right or it's dead.

Read through some of the reviews on newegg and a one star reviewer seemed to have the same issue as you and his was DOA(dead on arrival).

XP does not come with a whole lot of SATA drivers. You'll have to go to your motherboard manufacturer's website, download the SATA drivers and put them on a floppy. One of the first things you'll see when installing XP is a message that says 'Press F6 to install third party drivers'. If you don't have a floppy try this: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml

Sounds like a DOA drive to me. I think you should go on and RMA that thing.

Not necessarily. It could have some bad sectors or a faulty drive head which would only make themselves known during read/write operations, such as installing Windows. You could try plugging it into another computer and using Western Digital's diagnostic tools (free on their website) to run some tests on it. If you can't do that I would probably RMA the drive and get a replacement. If you're having problems getting Windows to detect and use the drive now it's only going to get worse with time.

It means it is not 100% dead, but you also said the Vista install saw it and then got an error.

That tells me something is up with this drive, or the motherboard. Most likely would be HD.

**EDIT**

Just to be on the safe side, did you try another cable. Have never heard of a problem with one, but you know murphy's law.

I'd start checking connections or change out the SATA power cable. Sounds to me the Sata HDD isn't getting enough power to spin the motor. That would allow the bios to see it but Windows not able to spin up the drive. Drive could also be DOA. BTW: that has happened to me.... changed out the power cable and my SATA HDD worked fine after doing that. And I don't know if this is still the case or not... but I remember my windows XP setup disk having trouble with a HDD's that was not pre-formatted. Remember I had to format the HDD with another PC with Windows already running on it. For some reason Windows could format it, but the setup disk for windows, couldn't. This was with an IDE HDD, by the way in about '01. I doubt that's still a problem, anymore. But... maybe it still is? In which case... plug that HDD into a working PC, and format it with that... then plug it into the new PC and the setup disk should have no problem installing Windows onto it.... maybe.
