Facebook games can hardly be called games, they use extremely tedious and repetitive mechanics and are complete cash grabs that require you to spam invitations.

That's their F2P model. It's a system that caters to people that genuinely play games 'casually', in a sort of dailu routine.

Facebook "games" aren't games they are simply digital chores that you are somewhat obligated to fulfill....

Facebook "game" are simply timesinks and cash pits for bored moms and kids. Nobody would play them if they weren't free, so they run a cash shop to make money and make it repetitive or difficult to do whatever emaningless crap you do to make it look like a good idea to buy points or items.

Depends which games though. I agree Cityville, Farmville etc (mostly from Zynga) are games which let you play for free but at the same time you need friends playing the same game. Other games like Words with Friends are awesome though.

The thing is, that Zynga has done well in that they have created simple free games and make lots of money off them. They should now limit the pop ups and just concentrate on making their servers stable.

i don't play facebook games. well, i don't use facebook so it's pretty hard. but from the facebook type of games that end up on iOS and android, i can tell you they are utter crap. you know the type i'm talking about, the ones that utilize energy. they make you question your sanity after a small amount of playtime.

LOL, I agree with the sanity bit. TBH, they are good games, for example Cityville is a pretty "complex" RPG (I say complex in the sense that for that type of level it's complex, not complex as in compared to a PC RPG). What RUINS them are the constant pop ups, ads and the need to use friends to advance.

i don't know about cityville but i see what you are talking about. there are some games on iOS that could be deep but often the gameplay is twisted around the concept of f2p and that squeezes out any possibility of enjoyment. there's nothing at all wrong with simple games, but the way they are implemented is horrendous. the objective of the game cannot be to repeat something entirely for the reward, there must be some enjoyment in the process. that is what separates grind from enjoyment. but anyone that has a some knowledge of games would not willingly spend time on those games. these last couple of years have seen the rise of free 2 play games on pc which have gotten critical acclaim in addition to financial success. games like tribes and LoL. and on the other end of the spectrum we see humble indie bundles that let you play some amazing games for ridiculously low prices (with the added ability to play on dated and weak hardware). i just don't see any reason why anyone would invest time on facebook nag games. we don't tolerate sub par software or software with nag screens and ads, i don't expect anyone to make an exception for facebook games.

I agree. I played both Farmville and Cityville in the past and tbh, if you look at the game by itself (ignoring the ads and annoying bits), it's actually a pretty good City and Farm Sim. They have hundreds of items, objectives, goals etc. But like I said, what ruins them isn't the repetitive nature, since they are meant to be played only for a bit each day, but the pop ups and friends needed to advance. These type of Zynga games aren't meant for hours of gameplay, they are meant as daily tasks, like watering ur plants etc.

They go off the same addiction philosophy as for example WoW and Diablo3. All about getting new items and doing new things with them.

Could'nt help but notice that most of the flash games utilize "energy" once you run out you just don't want to play it anymore also they urge you to buy credits

pspman1997
I wouldn't call them games, and yes, they all work that way (so do the majority of smart phone "games"). They make it fun and simple enough so any idiot can play and get somewhere, and then once they've got you hooked they put a brick wall in front of you that can only be overcome by either grinding for weeks or spending more money. The sad thing is that it seems to be working.

Why is it sad? It's just a legit strategy to earn money. I think the guys at Zynga are genius, I wish I would have invented that company. They create something addictive and then make you pay for more.... just like a F2P MMO.

Honestly its sad because developers don't have any other idea to earn money than to urge players to buy credits that run out in less than a couple of minutes The sad thing is that it seems to be working.

My fault I think gamespot has eaten my reply but anyway using credits is different an F2P mmo still has currency that allows you to buy decent enough items that will let you survive throughout the game. But with games made by zynga you have to have credits even if you get them for free you are still urged to buy some

Zynga games also have currency to take you.through the game. Buying just lowers the "grind". What stops you mostly is lack of friends playing.

These type of Zynga games aren't meant for hours of gameplay, they are meant as daily tasks, like watering ur plants etc.

bad example and that's a flaw of the game itself if you cannot play for more than 10 minutes. there are repetitive games like block busters or pacman or whack a mole. but the gameplay has an inherent attractiveness to it. if you play them for 10 minutes you will have fun, but you can continue to have fun for hours. another example would be hidden objects games; not exactly complex but you still kinda enjoy it. the farmville type games are dumbed down to a bunch of buttons that need pressing every few hours, and the game doesn't even try to hide it. there is absolutely nothing more to the game. also, how are those games good city and farm sims? correct me if i'm wrong (i think i played farmville on my phone once) but there are absolutely no meaningful tradeoffs, are there? it's just a matter of which plant will give you more money and at the end of the day the most successful player is the one who can turn himself into a robot. and once again, unlike shooters or MMOs or anything else, success is just a measure of how much money you can make in the game and repeat. clicking the mouse and hearing ka-ching is not a form of entertainment. sorry if i sound extremely biased against facebook games, but that's only because i am.

^^ It's ok to be biased, Zynga games aren't for everyone. I meant Sim as in you have to design your city or farm, choose what to put in it, fix the city, make the population happy etc etc. But like I said before, they are games for daily tasks, not to play for hours and hours.
