So the sandbox survival game The Forest came out on steam early access today. The trailers made the game look pretty good but it sounds from the store description like it might just be another minecraft clone with prettied up graphics and more of a horror focus.

Has anyone given it a go yet?

EDIT: looks like this is turning into another Early Access debate, please only post about the actual game not your views on whether or not Early Access is a fair business model.

Think I'm gonna wait awhile to pick it up, from the looks of it the game is pretty buggy.

@with_teeth26: I put 30 minutes in earlier today. It seems pretty cool, but also somewhat complex and bereft of documentation. It's very early, but it's more polished than a few other "zombie" early access games out there like The Dead Linger. I started, chopped down several trees, and got a 15 foot section of wall built before two monsters murdered me. The graphics and physics are pretty cool.

if you plan to pick it up when it's out, then why don't you buy it for cheaper now on early access? you don't have to play it now in the alpha state... consider it a cheap pre-order.

Most of the early access games never deliver, unlike AAA titles,

And I'm talking about the indie games not early access by big publisher.

most of them never deliver, yes, but some do. they key is being very choosy. don't debunk all of them. do your research on the games. i usually only fund projects that are being made by reputable developers that have lots of experience on delivering quality products.

not all AAA titles deliver either.

Developers should NEVER.. never charge for early access games. It's basically you paying the developers to do their job of testing the game for them. It's down right robbery. Especially on games you pay for early access and then the game never gets released, this is not all cases, but it's far to common.

@ferrari2001: These big companies I understand, but I think this game is like a 4 man team. Maybe the money helps them make it that much better. I do see this becoming abused in some way in the future.

indie developers don't have 100 of people lined up to test the game to find bugs. most of these early access titles are being developed by 1-10 man teams.

It's been my experience that most of the so-called "AAA games" absolutely SUCK and are aimed at brain-damaged tweens or adults who live in a perpetual state of arrested development. No thank you! I'll continue to support the smaller developers who actually take risks with their game design.

Looks quite good from what I saw on Youtube, I'll definitely buy into it down the road (when it has coop added).

Also, lol @ the babies afraid to try Early Access games. "Anyone remember that Minecraft blunder? Early Access games are nothing but stinkers that never deliver!" Not buying the game because not enough work has been put into it yet is one thing - that's completely understandable, but to be afraid to buy into any early access project even if the game interests you shows how little confidence you have in your own judgment.

Not sure as I died pretty quickly. There is a "Load" button on the main menu which would suggest that if they haven't implemented it yet then they will soon. This is .01 alpha and the menu has a countdown timer to the release of .02 which comes out in about 14 days.

The game is very pretty right now for what it is. Most "open world" build-type games look very rough compared to their more linear counterparts but the environments already look very good even with the odd texture glitch.

It's a shame that any time the subject of an Early Access game comes up, the trolls have to come out from under their bridges to derail the thread. I get that some people feel strongly about Early Access, but it's a shame that this translates into trolling.

I have nothing against early access... I do feel that a LOT of these early access game developers are biting far more than they can chew, simply put I don't believe that even the best of them can pull off a complete product with polish to the degree that games even like Watchdogs get scrutinized for.

A little ironic that people are playing Alpha's for months and then a game like Watch Dogs that is far beyond the quality of any early access game is or will ever be yet people act like its unplayable.

You guys are a joke.

Oh wait let me guess... "its alpha its not finished yet"... No s*** its alpha and its going to be alpha for another 6+ months and then Beta for a additional 6+ months so why are you buying a pre-alpha of a game that is far too ambitious from a developer that has never made a finished product to this degree?

look at Day Z... f***ing 5 years it was a mod and at the end of those 5 years it was still alpha quality product and now its been standalone for 6 months and guess what?... its still f***ing alpha!

If you guys where investors you would become bankrupt in no time. You don't back a concept... You back the persons ability to deliver the concept.

Are you going to cite you got to play the TESO beta for free one time, thus all alpha's should be free?

Some PC Gamers feel so self-entitled to every unfinished game that hits the internet, I'm really growing embarrassed for fans of the platform. All the console kiddies have hopped aboard the PC train.

PAID Early Access needs to die already. It's getting worse and worse by the minute.

I don't mind the devs opening the doors to see player feedback, but it should be free with the option to donate towards the production of the game.

As for the game: it looks beautiful and I like the idea behind it, hopefully it does well in it's final state.

from what understand you need to build a shelter and go inside of it to save.

And yes threads about early access and crowdfunded titles are turning into a joke. I can understand if you just dont like the idea behide them, but to troll in threads about them?

Let me get this straight you are embarrassed that "fans of the platform" don't agree with "early access" because its essentially buying a unfinished product?... Then you assume this mentality of "self entitlement" comes from the fact that "console kiddies" have come aboard the PC train?...

Okay well let me tell you a few things:

  • Map packs use to be free.. Until developers realised they could charge for them
  • Expansions use to be free... Until developers realised they could charge for them.
  • Alphas/Betas use to be free... Until developers realised they could charge for them.

Want to know how?... People like you.

Oh and I've been playing PC games since Quake almost 20 years now and honestly people like you embarrass me... Your paying for a unfinished product from a group of people that have never made a game before, well done.

Self entitled?... That's the dumbest thing I have heard in a while. Self entitlement has nothing do with things if money is involved. Want to pay for a unfinished product go right ahead.

If gamers want to keep gaming alive don't feed the early access train buy games like Dark Souls, The Witcher and Metro... Give money to developers who work 10 hours a day 6 days a week for 3-4 years working on a product not people moon lighting and making promises of games they clearly are struggling to keep.

annnnnnnnd back on topic...

I've been following The Forest for a while and bought it this weekend. So far it's pretty cool.

The graphics look great and the world fills alive. Crafting is pretty simple but it's still cool to chop at a tree and see it fall then collect the pieces to build a shelter. I got jumped by a native and it was intense, the fight lasted a while and I thought it was well done. I then took his limbs and burnt them in order to ward off other natives.

There are a lot of glitches so far, enemies clip through trees and walls, items seem to duplicate randomly and roll across the ground, and a ton of other small issues.

Honestly if you want to buy it now to experience it and support the developers I'd so go for it, but don't buy it if your looking to spend hours and hours playing, it's in too rough of shape to really invest serious time into IMO. They do have a countdown on the main page to the next patch so that's reassuring.

PS- Saving is currently broken, the devs have stated they are going to hot-fix it soon.

Not buying the game because not enough work has been put into it yet is one thing - that's completely understandable, but to be afraid to buy into any early access project even if the game interests you shows how little confidence you have in your own judgment.

You have gone beyond absurdity with this one. Just stop dude, you look more and more like a blathering idiot every time you post on this subject. Calling people out for being "afraid" or "lacking confidence in their own judgment" to buy into a alpha is the most ridiculous bs you have pushed to date.

It's so ridiculous that you can't even offer any alternative reason. :|

All it is with you is personal attacks, and never any substantial arguments. If you weren't afraid and an early access game interests you and has enough work put into it, why wouldn't you pick it up? Are you going to cite you got to play the TESO beta for free one time, thus all alpha's should be free?

Some PC Gamers feel so self-entitled to every unfinished game that hits the internet, I'm really growing embarrassed for fans of the platform. All the console kiddies have hopped aboard the PC train.

Give money to developers who work 10 hours a day 6 days a week for 3-4 years working on a product not people moon lighting and making promises of games they clearly are struggling to keep.

if you want to discuss early access please start another topic

Sure lets discuss the game...

I started to build a cabin and the logs I was placing weren't going to the right place... As you can see below.

Also the picture below that is another cabin I attempted to build where the same thing occurred... Oh and there are two brainless cannibals running around in circles next to it, which they did for 10 minutes before I got bored and decided to go and kill them.

To stay on topic... What do I think of the forest?.. Its broken and the trailers where even more misleading than Watch Dogs E3 gameplay.

What a tool. I don't have to offer any "alternative reason" as to why your psycho-babble bullshit is just that, it speaks for itself. You just stacked up more bullshit in this thread. .....Oh you should be embarrassed though, just not for the reason you are stating..

Talking about boring, I've played it for like 10 min top.

My impressions: the game is nothing but a Rust with enchanced graphics, got no storyline and I wish I read before and they do not attend to add one on the final release.

So yeah it's trailers are misleading as hell.

Where did you read that? The information I've read on this title there will be an underlying story and even an ending you can reach. If it's completely story-less, that would be dissapointing but do you have a link on that?

Got the game on my wishlist. Might buy it now and then just wait on playing it until it is finished.

It's rough, for sure, but it looks like they have an agressive update path. I bought it, but like with Wasteland 2 and Divinity I can sample it but am able to restrain myself from progressing too far in the unfinished product. I would recommend a similar approach for this game.

Looks good from that video, but no save is a bummer.

In The Forest, the player must survive on an island on which their character's plane has crashed by creating shelter, weapons, and other survival tools.[2] During the game the developers want players to question whether the island's cannibalistic tribe is the enemy of the player or vice versa;[2] for example, while fighting the player, the cannibals may try to protect one another from injury.[3]Though there are no set missions, there will be an optional conclusion to the game.[3
