I'm sad to see lack of love for Sacred. As a more casual ARPG fan, it's probably the only game in this genre that I've enjoyed more than D2

I think some of you all may be looking through rose-tinted glasses on D2. What about the duping, botting, hacking, enigmas? The skill system encouraged using 1 maybe 2 skills and only a limited viable builds per class. Itemization was similar to the skill system in that each class had their set of gear they achieved and deviated from that very little.

Don't get me wrong. D2 was probably my most played game growing up, but it seems everyone is putting it up on a pedestal as being the perfect ARPG when it's far from it.

All of this weren't a problem when you play the game like the majority of people likes to play their ARPG's. ALONE and OFFLINE ;)

Well of course you could just go Offline in DIII as we........OH WAIT! :D

That is a problem, but then again, most people want to take it to a new level of fun and play online.

Well, certainly, I in fact were among those that, in the times of Torchlight I hoped that Torchlight II would have multiplayer as well and I'm grateful it has, but I still spent the majority of my time in the single player part without multiplayer options forced down my throat.

Sure, one could argue now "But Steam as well is DRM" but first of, the Disc Versions of the game don't require Steam at all, and secondly, Steam also has a working offline mode.

Furthermore, D III's auction house, while maybe for some a minor complaint, but I could imagine that for some it could be frustrating to never drop any decent loot or it leads them to thinking they will get the best just for money, which is actually something I'd expect from a Free2Play Game, not a 60 Euro game I paid for and expect a full package.

Which TL II delivered for even just 20 Bucks, that, and when the Modding Tool will be released and it goes on Steams Workshop even more.

Well, okay, I got a little far off from your initial statement, but as I said above...

While I've spent many hours playing D2, and it's a timeless classic, it's mechanics don't stack up against other arpgs today.

It is not perfect and it has been outdone in areas (but nothing major), but it is the most well rounded package with some of the best design for skills and such yet. I feel like most ARPG's since its release do one thing great, but not the other parts. It is so unfortunate that Torchlight II holds part of the answer and Diablo III the other.

I have yet to play an iso ARPG with the atmosphere, production values (Voice acting, scenes, and unique art), addicting loot, fun skills, and so on of DII. Grim Dawn has a shot at it, and PoE maybe.

You're right, it's fantastic! However, when I brought up it's mechanics not stacking up against other arpgs today, I was refering mostly to the PvP and the economy/trading in D2.

You're definitely right on that one. The PvP was God awful.

I have not played enough of games like Titan Quest to judge PvP and trading, but...

  1. Do any games like this actually have good PvP? I personally couldn't care less. I like the co-op.
  2. I know there were bots galore and so on in DII (at least there are now), but even still I had a BLAST trading in DII a couple years ago. I am sure some people hacked and stuff, but honestly all the trades I made were fun and felt legit. I am such a good frikkin trader too! :P I ended with a godly smitadin ;) Loved my EVEXILE.

I hate how trading has gone to hell with the AH in DIII. I love bartering with people and such.
