Love me some postal.
Exactly my thoughts.

Well it's kinda doing the whole emphasize thing on the most important things as you can see explosions and blood, I know few games already done this like Spiderman Shattered Dimensions, The Saboteur and Betrayer, I hope you can change that in settings.
@PredatorRules: But this game is getting a massive backlash. I hope the devs doesn't cancel the project after this.
Looks like a stealth murder simulator. Well an assassin type game.
Heh, I'm kinda interested ;)

What kind of backlash?

Free publicity. I want to play it now.

I'm not against this kind of game being released. But people who are getting excited about this game purely off of this trailer weirds me the **** out.
I suppose feral gory behaviour appeals to our feral nature or something ;)
Assassin's Creed was the same thing really, so was Gears of War, just to name two.
I'm not against this kind of game being released. But people who are getting excited about this game purely off of this trailer weirds me the **** out.
Well the game is one of a kind, it addresses the phenomenon that is quite familiar with the world for the last years that people going rage and start shooting at public places at everyone.
They've presented the trailer in a very good way, just like movie trailers are made which are most of the time better than the actual movie, so goes for gaming trailers.
I enjoy gore stuff personally because that's the way I am, I've enjoyed Postal games, GTA3 with all it's mayhem, Ryse Son of Rome with it's body amputations, Shadow of Mordor and many more;
the main problem in this game is testing your morality if you're able to murder innocent civilians, things that were made before long time ago: Sim City (nature disasters), Sims (pool/fire kitchen), Modern Warfare 2 (airport), Black and White, etc - but now it's actually focusing on that subject in particular.
I'm not against this kind of game being released. But people who are getting excited about this game purely off of this trailer weirds me the **** out.
This game looks like sick fun - in a good way. Are you a girly man or something? Looks inspired by Postal, and seeing as I grew up on Postal, it's hard for me to not get interested in a game like this. I wish all games had this level of gore and brutality - I'd get a lot more enjoyment out of them.

Really? A Phenomenon?
Its not. Its a lack of mental health care and absurd gun laws. You all dont need assault rifles ffs.
Wow, that's just a bit too over the top for me to enjoy. This is the kind of game that gives gaming a bad name, thanks devs...
Not really, this is a point to argue about, the whole concept of violent video games, maybe the devs actually wanted to take care of those real people who do that in real life to manage their anger inside a game and not do it for real; now on the other hand it could attract more people to do so (start a rage run and gun for real) - there's a positive and a negative things about everything so, I can't judge them.
Taking your aggresstion off is made by many things, not just video games, the video games part is taken by gamers of course, there's also Gym and sports, art, music and many more stuff to take your aggression off.

It's grown in the last couple of years in many countries in the world, not just in the US.
Mental health care got IMO nothing to do with those types of people, those are the quiet people that snapps after a very long time in a way that they conceal all their pain like a filled bunker with explosives.
Gun laws can reduce it of course but I don't think that will stop them, they could improvise something, maybe something even worse like a bomb or explosive belt.
Fuel to the fire for the politicians. LOL.........At least GTA doesn't announce itself as a mass killing game. Maybe I'll pick this game up one day when I'm about to go on a real killing spree. Fvck the world!! Fvck me!!! Fvck you too! Fvck who ever reads this!!! Fvck gamespot!!!!! Fvck this game too!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! My body is ready.

GTA Vice City, San Andreas, 4 and 5 are serious games with excellent characters and storyline, the games before that were about mayhem and mass killing; not that you can't do those things in the newer games but IDK maybe it's just me grown after 10 years, so I take these games more seriously. (GTA3 and Postal games were my main mass murdering for fun games)

Postal was a shit series though. But gore isn't the problem here, it's just how completely unlikable the protagonist here is. It's dumb teenage angst at it's purest form. And anybody who identifies with that is an A-grade retard.

I have to agree with Revan here.
There is no hook to the game. You just run around and kill people for the sake of killing people. They have then sensationalised the violence with the over the top and completely unnecessary finishers. The game will be as garbage as postal was, be in the $2 steam bin within a month.
The shock value is all that will get people talking about it and any publicity is good publicity I guess.

You act like you've never ran over innocent people in Grand Theft Auto. Murdering people in video games is fun!
I enjoy a good shoot 'em up just like the next gamer, but for me this issue here is of tone. At least the Postal series was trying to be humorous/satirical (even if it wasn't always good at it, especially the later games)--one of my best gaming memories is mowing down the marching band in the first Postal. :-) :-) And the graphics were cartoony.
But from the title of the game to the more realistic graphics (ie, sticking a gun in an innocent woman's mouth and blowing her brains out) Hatred is just violence pornography, pure and simple, for the sake of being inflammatory. And I can almost....ALMOST....see a spot for this type of thing in the gaming landscape. Somewhere. Maybe? But even worse, the last thing this industry needs is more negative media attention. And at a time in (at least in America) where everyone is already jittery enough about real-world shooting rampages.
I'm trying to be opened-minded until more about the game is known, but....hm.

Yup, but there was a much more to it in GTA. In Hatred, it seems like thats all there is to it.

I find it quite funny that folks keep bringing up GTA as if its the same thing. I figured that with "GTA" they'd figured the message/point was different from Hatred. Y'know....GTA.....as in grand theft auto......as in I steal vehicles? It just so happens the game lets you kill folks as well but Hatred.....its about, well: mass murder. Y'know, as in you are not right in the head so you go kill people? It just so happens that Hatred lets you kill......oh wait.....
@airshocker: It seems like poor taste to me. At least with Naughty Bear, the purpose was to cause chaos and the AI were just teddy bears lol. This game is obviously just a grab for media coverage and attention, hence the guy who kills innocent civilians as the...protagonist? The only reason people will buy it is because of the hype and attention it will receive. Without all the attention, I cannot in my right mind believe that anyone could rate this game highly based on the game's own merits. I can guarantee this game will completely suck in terms of gameplay, story (what story?), sound design, etc.
Honestly I'm just extremely happy to see a game like this come around. With all the feminism bullshit, social justice warriors, overall pussy generation of over sheltered kids/parents, and paranoia (OMG EBOLA), this is a breath of fresh murderous air. It's already proven violent games have absolutely no affect on murder rates whatsoever so who cares. I love games that push peoples buttons and this looks like it's already doing its job very very well. Even if it's bad I will still buy it to support people that are not afraid to stand up and do whatever the **** they want.

Agreed, it's in extremely poor taste. I would go so far as to say it's quite sickening. Depending on its success, it will definitely make video gaming look bad. And who knows? It might even set into motion some type of government censorship.

It's not like me or anyone else sits around thinking "Oh, there needs to be more games where you play a psycho who kills innocent people", that's not really the point - it's just nice when game developers come out and say "Yea, we're not trying to sell our game to every single person out there in the Universe and create a game pandered to everyone, we just want to deliver a experience that we think is fun". There simply aren't enough games like that. Most games play it safe and avoid pursuing the fullest extent of their ideas and potential because they're afraid of being offensive or "different'.
Postal was tons of fun, and I think the theme is a ton of fun too. If you think the protagonist is particularly relatable or likeable in any game these days, and think a game is better for it, I'd think you're an A-grade retard. The level of fun you have from a videogame should in no way extend from how much you relate to the videogame character. If you're looking for some sort of relation with a protagonist, maybe consider a book or a novel instead. Games are supposed to be fun, and if it achieves its goal, who gives a shit? Do you only play games where the protagonist is go-lucky happy individual who fights bad guys? Sounds like pretty boring tastes to me...
Regardless, do you really feel like that much of a better person killing cops in GTA or Payday? If so, how come? You should feel worse about killing cops than civilians. If you feel like taking virtual lives is bad or reflects moral compass, maybe you should put the videogames down?
Your sort of reaction reminds me of how people treated John Carpenter's Halloween...
"Who'd want to see a bunch of teenage girls get murdered for an hour? This movie is for nobody but sickos and angsty teenagers, I feel sorry for people who watch it this".
lol.
Developers should be able, and encouraged, to create any game they desire without fear of censorship or excessive criticism or scrutiny.
With that said, I am wondering what exactly the context of this game is. Angry dude wants to massacre everyone and die via "suicide-by-cop"? If so, that is a pretty bland and unoriginal idea. Furthermore, it is inspired by real-life tragedies, unlike most games which are inspired by imagination (sci-fi, fantasty, etc) or history (WWII games, etc).
I will admit this game looks interesting, I just hope it does more than appeal to the lowest common denominators with cheap, shallow thrills and gimmicks.
Just waiting now for the tabloid to blame some murders on this game because the murderer played a game once. I don't see a problem with any game, what's the difference between this and call of duty?
Don't tell me you play cod mp or bf4 for the chance to simulate being a soldier, you play it to shoot and blow people up.
I think the only game I would have a problem with would be a pedophile simulator.

Fair enough, I guess Postal is a better comparison.
Okay, after reading some more posts on this topic, I would like to say that I am all for creative freedom. I enjoy when devs get to craft something they personally enjoy making. Censorship in this case would be pushing too far in the wrong direction from the outside, so I would still say that is off the table. However, to say that video games do not influence affect or behavior in any way is complete balogna. This is not to say that this game should be the scapegoated cause of a to-be mass murder, but perhaps understanding the motives behind this character and what people will be conditioning themselves to view for countless hours having mindless fun should be considered. I remember when I was a small lad and MK1 came out, and there was an outcry with that, too.
Then came the ESRB. On one hand, it did in some way limit creative freedom, but it also standardized a rating system by through which games of certain maturity could not be sold to minors, who are undoubtedly more influenceable. Indeed, I grew up on MK, and UT'99 was one of my favorites. I do not necessarily believe that video games cause behavior, but instead that being exposed to certain levels of gratuity will dull one's perceptiveness to what is too much. I'm taking a guess here and assuming (unsheltered) people who grew up on video games will know the difference from games and reality, perhaps learning newer skills or improved eye-hand coordination, etc. It could have many benefits, but hand a game like this to some deranged individual, and you may be boiling that pot a little bit over, if you know what I mean.
So, reiterating what I said before, there are other games that have incredibly, incredibly violent, immersive, murderous scenarios, but many times, the AI are monsters seeking to destroy humanity, or are other armed humans through which there is some sort of skill being tested for the player via healthy competition. I just don't see that with this game at all. Again, I'm not saying creative freedom should be limited. I am just saying that I feel that this game will definitely be bad, and the devs should feel bad. It's beyond the level of Manhunt and even Postal in terms of conveying the motive of "I just want to kill as many innocent, unarmed people as I can before I die a horrible death." I mean the guy outright says that in the trailer, lol. I mean, at my campus, I'll see others in the computer labs looking up fights, accidents, and deaths and going crazy over them of how they love how some guy broke his neck.. or got ripped in half... or shot himself. They love it. At that point, it's beyond the point of curiosity and to the point of unhealthy seeking of more for pleasure.
I don't mean to speak for others, but I think this is the position that airshocker and I have in common. This game just seems irresponsible and promotes mindless killing of innocents set to real-world scenarios using motives that are actually at play in mass shootings. It's poor taste.
I'm not against this kind of game being released. But people who are getting excited about this game purely off of this trailer weirds me the **** out.

But the trailer is selling you on 2 things, it's a top-down shooter, and it features a lot of violence. But nobody would actually care if it was just that. Dual-stick shooters have been done to death. There's nothing to get excited about here. All you have in this trailer is shock factor. So if you have this long unsatisfied fantasy to murder only for the sake of it, I guess thats your game. Which then, yes, I'll consider you to be a weirdo for it. Deal with it.

Battlefield has goals besides simple violence: CTF, Conquest, Domination, Obliteration, etc. The goal isn't to brutally kill people, because even in BF4 you can't grab someone and perform a ridiculously brutal execution with a firearm. Even a knife kill isn't as bad as some of the shit in this trailer.
Lets not also forget that you are playing at war in games like Battlefield and Call of Duty. These titles have nothing in common with Hatred and it's intellectually dishonest to try and compare the two. Not all violence is created equal.
I'm not against this kind of game being released. But people who are getting excited about this game purely off of this trailer weirds me the **** out.
Right? I don't get the obsession with running around brutally murdering innocent people. Some seriously dark stuff and imo if this is what you find enjoyable you need to take a long hard look at yourself.
For most people it would be just a game but there are far too many unstable people out there that are too easily influenced. Imo this is extremely irresponsible for the devs to make this game.
Good article.
I had one instant reaction to the ultra-violent trailer for Hatred, where a misanthropic psychopath intones, ‘I just f***ing hate this world,’ before slaughtering civilians in a variety of ways including a rather messy pistol-in-mouth ‘wet’ kill.
I burst out laughing.
Making this sort of pointlessly offensive trailer is the oldest joke in the book – but it works every time.
Sure enough, the developers have got exactly what they wanted – game sites scrambling onto their high horses to warn of the moral dangers of playing an unfinished game they have never played.
Somehow, Hatred is instantly worse than any of the zillion games where you can slaughter civilians if you so choose – and worse than TV series such as Breaking Bad, where viewers vicariously enjoy Walter White flooding America with methamphetamine while melting enemies in his acid bath.
Other windbags are rushing to join in the condemnation.
But the whole idea that games are somehow different from horror films, or novels or comics, just because you take physical control of a character is bogus.
It has no basis in science whatsoever. It’s based on tired, old stereotypes about gaming and murder, mouthed by legal defence teams for killers – ‘Your honour, Grand Theft Auto made him do it’ – and parroted by windbag game site bores, and then, inevitably, by MPs who know nothing about games.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrX7G-1xPLs
I must have murdered several million enemies in my 30 years of gaming – I’ve played Thrill Kill, Postal 2, Soldier of Fortune, Severance: Blade of Darkness, Sword of the Berserk, Manhunt, Manhunt 2 and every Grand Theft Auto. Plus enough World War II titles to have slaughtered most of the Wehrmacht.
I have clubbed tramps to death, sliced women to shreds, chainsawed the innocent, and got high scores for doing so.
MORE: Is civilian massacre game Hatred the most violent video game ever?
I have also, oddly, never murdered anything larger than a wasp in real life.
Frankly, Hatred is pretty unpleasant stuff – the mentions of ‘genocide’ in the script are a little chilling – but the idea it’s going to lead to teenage gamers becoming mass murderers is about as rational as the idea that playing Mario is going to lead to you eating toadstools and jumping on flowerpots.
People will play it if it’s fun, they won’t if it isn’t.

Okay there soccer mom. You're forgetting that the trailer is also selling people on the idea of being a spiritual successor to Postal. Not sure how you can miss that. I haven't played a dual-stick shooter like this since Postal, so I don't see exactly how it's been done to death... Can you create this long list of "top down" shooters that provide gameplay similar to Postal 1? Something tells me you can't (protip: because you're wrong). Are you going to go on a mantra saying that all dual-stick shooters are the same? If you are, then I don't think I have much to say to you...
It's a game clearly inspired by Postal, and it looks like practically the exact same game but a next-gen version. If you played Postal growing up, how could you not be in the least bit interested in playing the title? Looks like it has good graphics, physics, fluid gameplay and an uncommon inspiration.
Why do you keep dodging my questions about killing cops and civilians in other games? Do you only play games for children? Why are you focusing so hard on this game and ignoring the fact that you do similar things in the majority of existing sandbox shooters out there? I guess it's just easier to ignore arguments that you can't win...

And what about every GTA game in existence? You get rewarded for killing civilians, robbing banks, prostitutes, etc. with ingame money. It's hilarious seeing people complain about this game, yet likely every single person saying "Oh, this is horrible, way too shocking" likely has already killed 1,000,000 civilians in GTA (with pleasure). I have a really hard time taking anyone speaking out about this game seriously, it's been around forever in other iterations.
Postal 1 was only cartoonish because they didn't have access to better graphics at the time, and when the option became available to go 3D - they chose that option. Postal 1's humor was also very dry (to the point of being non-existent), so people saying that this game's tone differs from Postal is dead wrong IMO. Postal 2 and Postal 3 were a bit more humorous and "fun", but Postal 1 did not really bark up that same tree.
I notice a trend in this thread. If you kill people for money, or for war - everyone approves. If you kill someone because you don't like them, it's shocking and bad. Dang, you guys aren't messed up in the head at all...it's as if you guys forgot that killing people for any reason whatsoever isn't a good thing. I don't understand how you can go "Oh, it's okay to kill people in this game" and then go "Oh, you're killing people in that game! How horrible". It's hilarious and shows how Westerners are a lil fucked up in the head.
