Haven't played Oblivion since 2008. Should I bother trying to get back into it?

I haven't played Oblivion in a really long time. I don't know what new mods are out, and I don't feel bothered enough to go searching for the good ones (I recall spending more time researching mods than I did actually playing the game). Is it still worth it to play it vanilla, or is there one big mod (like OOO) that is worth playing by itself?

In my opinion vanilla Oblivion has never been worth playing. The game is all about mods. With that said, Nehrim, is a total conversion and it's pretty good.

Not worth playing if you're going to do native. Nehrim is ok but, can be very taxing on your machine. I prefer installing my own mods rather than just playing Nehrim.

I have heard of a new overhaul mod that is coming out but, I still think it's months away from release. Looks like it would cause my comp to crawl on it's belly begging for mercy though.

Don't let mods deceive you, vanilla Oblivion is a wonderful game in it's own right. I suggest you add some texture and graphics mods if you must, play through, and then experiment with gameplay-altering mods.

Get OOO if you want to play Oblivion. Play Nehrim if you want a different game.

I played oblivion twice through without mods at release, I digged it. That said, it hasn't aged too well, so well, if you are not expecting super 1337 graphix and quake fluidity in movement, then sure.

Tried to play through Oblivion but the "hell gates" mission became bugged and the next one never appeared. I might go back to it and play though again but that's so many hours dedicated to it wasted and replaying the same missions O_o ugh

Oblivion needs to be modded to oblivion to become a good game. Vanilla Oblivion is just not that good.

You liked it? But how do you show your true fps warrior skills?

Agreed completely. Oblivion is worth playing for sure, if you mod it.

I think i'm the only person whose played it unmodded and unpatched and experienced no problems. Still, it's a great game packed with content that's absolutely worth playing again just to find any hidden nooks and crannies you might have missed.

Just keep hitting stuff with a sword, it's fun. It's like a FPS but with a sword.

Unfortunately unlike mass effect 2, it's not a yelling at people simulator :(

Imho, Oblivion (vanilla) played great in its time, but present day, you'll need some good mods. So if you're not up to downloading Oblivion mods AND* to get them working (because it can feel like a chore), then forget about it and move onto Skyrim. Before mods, I couldn't stand Oblivion, but with mods, it made so much better and I ended up liking it a lot.

I can't believe what im hearing from all of you guys. I enjoy the vanilla oblivion to this very day. Oblivion is one of those games that will remain amazing for years to come, i find the graphics to look pretty good in most areas, but of course it shows it's age even when it's maxed out. Don't worry about mods mate, just enjoy this great game.

Your not alone..There are some of us who dont mod..Enjoy things the way the game should be played..Graphics never bothered me like those that go omfg the graphix suck..Guess thats because when you come from the atari days it doesnt bother you lol..We used to play games with a square and enjoy them..Any how the game is great with out mods..Playing through the game again..Only learned how to mod a little while ago im not that good at it..So i guess thats why i enjoy my games unmodded..Ive got nothing againts them..Especially with the modding community did with gta4 that looked incredible..

Man im so lookin forward to skyrim this winter..Shame it comes in november along with all the other great games do out this year..

Sorry, but not everyone's issues with Oblivion revolved around its graphics. In my opinion, Oblivion's graphics were fine and the least of its problems. Yes, the animations and character models were terrible but that didn't really bother me too much. It was the game that I had problems with.

The mods I used to make it "playable" mostly fixed some of the poorly implemented game-play mechanics like, for instance, the silly and heavy-handed level scaling. There were also thousands of bugs that were fixed by mods and unofficial patches.

So, again, it's not always about graphics -- mods can also make a bad and poorly designed game tolerable.

I started a new character last night. However I have about 30 mods installed which drastically improves the game experience.

It's not the graphics that we're concerned about modding, it's the horrid design choices that Bethesda decided to implement.

In case you haven't caught on, the majority of the people on this forum hate Oblivion with a passion for some reason. I believe Oblivion is worth getting back into.
