You have to wonder how fast the fan is spinning under load...
I know under idle it is only at ~10%.

They should be fixing the fan control and the clock/voltage for idle.
Also, looking at jimmyz thread, reapplying TiM decreased his temps ~20C.

I hear the PowerPlay feature isn't working yet. Once new drivers fix that, core and memory clocks will be lower at idle (core at probably 300-400 mhz). That plus custom cooling and rivatuner/ati tools later to raise the fan speed, problem solved.

And reapplying thermal paste will help too:

From the xtremesystems forums:

"Some notes before the testing. The fan speed very low on the factory bios, I haven't been able to use any fan control to raise the speed so far. The temp is most likely fine even with an Idle of 79c but Being an XS'er I removed the factory thermal goop and replaced it with A.S. Ceramique. the idle temps are now 55c most of the time."

WTF? Wow, too bad Rivatuner and countless other apps can adjust fan speed and completely fix the problem. Not to mention refined drivers are coming out sometime early July with the HD 4870 and it will add the Powerplay functionality, then it will run at 20% power/speed at idle to save on power and heat, kinda like Nvidia's HybridPower solution.

All in all, HD 4850 still rocks.

95.5C. My ATI 9800XT used to get to 90C at full load with the fan on 100%. ATI cards do run hot. I have had a lot of ATI cards and I find them not very overclockable and quite hot.

Nvidia will kinda suck with this gen cards while the big problem of the HD 4850 is that is a single slot solution no exhaust like the 4870 so it will be hotter

My x850xt overclocks well, 50 on the core and 100 on the memory. Doesnt* go above 75c with 100% fan. My 9600xt clocked pretty well, I cant remember the temptures though.

My card never tops 82C under load. Once they get the fan speed programs working I'll set it to 95% full-time and see if that mid 60's idle goes down, which it should since it shows only 22% fan utliization. The downclock feature will be nice, too, it already does it to 500/750 from (my mild OC) 660/1025.

Personally, I think it's the biggest revolution in graphics since the 8800s were released. It packs unbelievable power for $200, integrated sound support even through the DVI to HDMI adapter, and it's a single slot card :) I currently also have a 8800GTS 640mb, and I'm either going to keep the 4850, buy a 4870, or return the 4850 (best buy 30 day return policy ftw) because I would like having $200 in mah pocket ;) It maxes games that my 8800GTS would play on high. Age of Conan is playable at over 30fps for me at 1680x1050 maxed with an e6600 and 3gb ram. TF2 maxed at said rez 50+ fps. HL2 maxed at 1920 x 1080 100+ fps. It's pretty awesome :) If Crysis would ever work again (hasn't worked since I reinstalled vista :() I'd try that out, too. I'll be trying more games in the near future... and testing it's OC abilities once I can change the fan speed. It's really a fantastic card... even with no drivers to speak of :)

I don't know if you can tell, but I'm not exactly an ATI fanboy by trade... but this card impresses on every level. Can't wait to seee the HD4870 or a 4850 with a dual slot cooler or DDR5.

how does the warranty work with bestbuy, do you really just take it back? (so could you basically keep returning video cards when new ones come out?)

Including tax? Do you have to pay a restocking fee?

That sounds great, I'll head to bestbuy tonight, should be a nice upgrade from a x1950. Then I can return it when the 4870x2 comes out:twisted:

39C on load are on load are you kidding me?

The ATI stock cooler got seriously owned!

Asus is doing some nice moves with the 4850. Yesterday you could see the Asus 4850 @ newegg for $169.99 MIR

Now it has a nice cooler :)

If i grab a 4850 maybe it would be in between Asus or visiontek

Accelero is the one that is BYO Fan right? If so, then the fan is independent of the card. The main problem right now is no control over fan speed. I don't think it speeds up during load, either. Once fans start working, I'd be surprised to see temps top 70 under load. For my setup, anyway.

And @ Achilles: There are certain items that require a restocking fee, but graphics cards are not among them. You get every penny you paid back with the extent of questioning being them asking you why you're returning it. You can ask them what their return policy is before you buy the card if you like :P

Some ATI cards have crappy stock coolers which is a $20 fix, So you might want to check out the one you got. It could also be a driver issue as someone else said.

Other questions you gotta ask are: how is your cases airflow? Are your case fans pointed in the right direction(each fan should have a arrow on it indicating the airflow direction)? Are your cables tidy? Did you Overclock it?

The 4850 kills the GTX240 and is almost even with the GTX280, the 4870 and 4870X2 will put Nvidia in their place.

There really is no excuse for this. Why would the factory fan settings be not appropriate for the average use of the card?

You shouldnt have to manually adjust these things.

guys this is not a issue use a third party app like Riva Tuner and it should all be good. I use it in all my ati cards. And i am sorry but amd/ati wins this round. because the following reasons.

1. Sli is still locked only to nvidia based chipset Motherboards

2. there cards are very expensive and not to mention there midrange cards are no longer in the lead when it comes to perfromance and price.

3. Ati/Amd graphics cards are looking more promising than ever.

those are my reasons. Especailly reason #1

The card does NOT run that hot even if at stock. The real temps are around 60C idel and 80C load. Take it from someone who has one in a small case with pretty restrictive airflow. After using Rivatuner to turn the fan to 50% (it was at 20%) , it running around 44C idel and 56C load. It's not that big of a problem.

It's a fantastic card, but it's going back to BB. I've decided that the performance gain for $200 isn't enough to warrant upgrading from my 8800GTS 640mb.

Funny to see PC Gamers looking up at MGS 4's amazing graphics. Nothing on the PC comes close. All you can do is deny it. NvidiaGaMer

    Tell me that i did not see this coming. Yes MGS 4 graphics looks nice but surely thats a understatement. I seen A hi def footage and to be honest with you i was a little bit not too impressed but overall yes it is a big major breakthrough. Especially from the older series. But to say "nothing comes close" i just had to laugh.

Furthermore the 4850 can take on the cell and mop the floor with it.

And the 4870 can take on the PS3's RSX 7800GTX modified chip along with the cell and can mop the floor with it.

Every thread I've been posting in has been related to it. I don't care if you find me annoying, tbh.

The card itself is fantastic, but you'd better make sure it's well-ventilated until you're able to adjust the fan speed through software :)
