i am currently picking out parts for my new PC build and i have been contemplating on what to do for a hard drive. i have been planning on using a 150gb WD Raptor but it seems like most people complain about it being noisy. usually i listen to music while on my computer, so i dont think that would be a big deal for me. however, performance is. could i get comprable performance for setting up multiple 7200 drives in a raid setup? any help would be much appreciated.

meh, the raid probably won't make a noticeable difference in your case. I was in the same boat as you a few days ago and in the end I decided just to grab a couple 7200 drives. The reason being simply that I could get 2 drives for the price of one raptor and these newer 7200's are rather close to the raptors speeds.

I'm assuming you're talking about SATA drives, right?

A 7200 RPM should be good for you if it is too loud.

Waaaaaay much expensive that HDD so i'd not think about these SSD untill couple of years when i believe the prices will start to be reasonable (and maybe not).

@ OP : Running x2 7200rpm in RAID0 will have the same performance as Raptor drive and many people even prefer this choice for less noise

raptors aren't worth it over standard drives, tiny and only a tiny bit faster. you standard 7200rpm drive is fine and much cheaper and bigger

either some Seagate 7200.11 or this 320gb WD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136074

Hopefully that WD is the single platter model which gives some really nice speeds.

You can (and should) just get one 500gb 7200rpm drive for $100 on newegg. That's what I would do.

as an owener of a 10,00 rpm HDD, i can tell u its not that big a deal. its the one decision that i regret making when putting this PC together. i wish i got a good 7200RPM HDD with more capacity instead. it really doesent make that huge a difference to the loading times in alot of games in my esperience.

theres an article about HDDs in a UK mag called custom PC and they recommended either the samsung spinpoint F1 or the spinpoint t166. they might be worth checking out. supposed to be great performers and they have a much bigger capacity.

Raptors really aren't worth the extra money for the small amount of extra speed they give. 1 or 2 good 16mb cache seagate or western digital 7200 rpm drives should give you more than enough performance.
