Hello everyone. I bought Windows Vista 64-bit a few days ago from the Internet and it will not be shipped until Monday due to slow shipping. I have also built a new computer and the only thing I need is Windows Vista to install, but I want to use the computer on the weekend and not have to wait. So, I was wondering if I can install a "special" version (if you know what I mean) of Windows XP 32-bit on my computer in the meantime, then when my Windows Vista 64-bit arrives, I can just upgrade it. Would this idea work? I also heard that you cant upgrade from a Windows XP 32-bit to a Windows Vista 64-bit. If this upgrade would not work, would I be able to reformat the Hard Drive and install Windows Vista 64-bit when it arrives? Or, will I be able to upgrade and not have to reinstall all of my programs? If you have any solution or idea, please let me know. Thanks. :)

U can put 32 bit on, but will have to reformat for when you put on 64bit. This will cause you to lose everything.

You will have to reinstall everything and tbh, the amount of effort needed to fine tine and get the right drivers, i would just wait for the 64bit

Yes, unfortunately that is the way of things. And if you don't reformat and just try the 'upgrade to Vista' it really doesn't upgrade, it just installs over XP. The worst part is that it doesn't delete XP-it actually just adds to the amount of space used on your hard drive. So in other words, if XP takes around 3 or 4 gigs, and Vista uses around 8 to 12, now your operating system has just taken up 16 to 20 gigs.

Do urself a favor and backup your vital info and do a full format/install. ;)

P.S. I am also using the 64bit-Vista Ultimate - I like it, so should you. :)

Well, if I do an upgrade, it will upgrade over Windows XP and when I have Windows Vista, I can delete XP. But, I am not sure if I can upgrade from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Vista.

You can always partition your hard drive so you can save what you want to keep on one partition while you use the other partition to format and install windows. If you have two hard drives though you won't need to partition.
