Hey guys, I really need a new headset. I'm currently "rocking" this headset, which I've had for about a year. It has done what it's supposed to do, but it frankly sucks. My budget is $150, but I really don't want to spend that much.

With that being said, the only headset I'm really considering at $150 is the Sennheiser PC 350, but I would prefer to spend a bit less (and hopefully retain the same or near quality). Suggestions? Ideally my realistic budget is like $100 - $125, but if there is nothing in that range (in terms of comparable quality to the Sennheiser headset), I guess I'll have to take the plunge.

Does not have to be wireless, although that'd be nice.

Edit - I think I may just go with a good pair of headphones and get a clip-on microphone. That way I can actually use the headphones for my MP3 player if I wanted, too.

There are recommendations for each of the items you've detailed in the first post of this sticky. Take a look, and if nothing there suits your needs, come on back and ask some follow-up questions. Good luck, Boz

So guys I've decided I'm going to get the Matrix M-stage amp with the amp upgrade option. Its about $300. Everyone said it sounded very neutral, low distortion, and would work well with the Senns and Grados. I will have impressions in a few weeks. This post serves as an official stop being broke, and start saving message

There's a USB version of the M-Stage? Or are you talking about another Matrix AMP/DAC?

http://tamaudio.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=108 It came out in 2011 DAC is under features( not sure what a jitter is, but there are 2 pieces listed) " USB input module is based on TAS1020B and PCM1793 which provides 24 bit / 96 KHz high quality DA conversion"

In the M-stage thread, you start seeing posts going back a few pages

Jitter has to do with the timing of those ones and zeroes that make up digital audio signals. Ideally, the timing should be perfect, but jitter will throw it off somewhat. More jitter is a bad thing. That said, I get the feeling that maybe the audiophiles are blowing the jitter thing way out of proportion, and that audible amounts of jitter would mean a seriously defective S/PDIF output.

Looking for some durable headphones that can be tossed a bit and still work fine with average sound quality. My optimal price is $70-$80, but if I have to spend $100 that is fine. Also, no Turtlebeaches. I'm on my second pair of the Earforce X11's and everyday they get worse, only one headphone works now and that one is hanging by threads.

Headphones or headset? I recommend headphone + external mic. My HD555s sound great if you have a stereo or a decent soundcard powering them. They don't have much bass though, so you'd have to adjust your EQ a bit. I believe they're discontinued in favor of 558s, so you might be able to find some cheap. Refurbs are great as well. They're also open-back so they leak sound.

Could take a look at Audio-Technica's offerings for the same price range. Can't go wrong with any of them.

As said above, HD 555 are discontinued so should probably be removed from the thread. I can't get any in the UK, maybe it's different in USA but i think they should be replaced in this sticky. HD 558 that replaced them are more expensive though.

I've wanted to update the sticky for some time, but due to a bug with Gamespot and HTML code, it is prohibitively difficult to rewrite the code to BBCode to make the changes. Once the fix comes through I will be making an update, but at this point folks will just have to figure out its protege is the HD 558 on their own. :( I'd really like to reorganize the whole thing to make it a bit more intuitive. The HD555 has been replaced by the HD 558s, which are significantly more expensive. The HD 518 is an alternative, though not nearly the value king that the HD 555's were. If you can find an HD 555 in your area, it's a very, very good buy. That said, I personally found them uncomfortable (I have a giant head), and prefer a closed-back headphone. Your mileage will vary. Good luck, Boz

You do not need an amp, though it will improve the sound should you ever decide to go down that road. Good luck! Boz

I've been looking for some good headphones that don't cost a ton since the right speaker on my old sony mdr-cd180s went out need a bit more in depth recommendations. I got the Koss UR-20s that were recommended on here but don't like the audio quality on them so I'm returning them. I really wish I could just get another pair of my old headphones but they are no longer being made and aren't stocked by anybody so I'd like to try and find something that has a similar or better sound and comfortability for a low price.

Try the JVC HARX700. I recently bought a pair, and they are extremely comfortable, sound great, and offer similar qualities to the Sony's you referenced. They're inexpensive, widely available, and particularly great for gaming. There are only two drawbacks: they are gigantic, and the midrange can be a bit muddy with certain vocals. But hey, it's a sub-$40 headphone. You won't do much better until you hit the $80 to $100 mark, in my opinion. Boz

After asking around about the Sennheiser HD 202's and 203's, I found the Superlux HD668B's on Headphone, and they seem to be very good (looking at the reviews). Anyone have any feedback on them since they're $50 and I'd be waiting 2-4 weeks for them, or anything similar?

In the first post I state that the list is meant to show only headphones which notably improve upon preceding price ranges, meaning anything listed in the $30 - $40 would be - theoretically - better than those in the $20 - $30 range; YMMV. I have never used the Superlux phones, personally, but have heard good things. I do own a pair of HD202s, and they are excellent for the price, and not too bass-heavy. In its price category, I have not problems recommending the HD202's to anyone interested in an inexpensive, closed-back headphone. Personally I'd go ahead and pull the trigger on the HD202's; they're great headphones, and a particularly good point at which to dip your toes into the discerning headphone marketplace. I hope this is helpful. Boz

I don't see why you can't just get a headphone and a ModMic, plus an Astro Mixamp for the PS3... ...but if you insist on a headset, can you afford the Sennheiser PC360 and a Mixamp?

Asking this is much like saying, "can anybody recommend me some good cars that has a fast engine and reliable performance? " Sure, but I might suggest anything from a Subaru to an Aston Martin. How are you using the headphones? PC or console? For travel or not? Exercising? What's your budget? Is appearance a factor? The more detail you provide the better the suggestions we can provide. Start with the recommendations in the OP, and go from there. Happy gaming, Boz

Hey I'm looking for a recomendation for a set of PC gaming headphones (Preferably over ear)

My budget sits around $100-150, I'm obviously willing to go higher if the price justifies the preformance. I don't need a mic just the headphones themselves.

Parts Express has them, and I don't think shipping would be too much to Canada (~$35 FedEx).

If you're not afraid of used headphones, take a look at postings on Canuck Audio Mart.

Example:

This user is selling a pair of Beyerdynamic DT880 600Ohms for $115 + $15 shipping.

kraken2109 is right. That said, the Headphone FAQ is limited in its recommendations for simplicity: Too many choices can paralyze shoppers. There are lots of great headphones out there in your range. NVIDIATI's DT880 recommendation is spot on, it's an excellent closed-back headphone, very comfortable, if a bit bass-heavy. I prefer a little extra bass for gaming, though, as it's more impactful. Where in Canada are you? Maybe someone here can recommend a local retailer, particularly if you're near a major city. Happy gaming, Boz

Actually the DT880s are open back, but the bass presence is a little higher than something like the AKG K701 or K702.

You got me! I was thinking of the 770's, which are probably closest to my personal "ideal" headphone for gaming. I haven't auditioned the 880's, personally. Good catch, Boz

I'm located in Alberta, I recently checked out a Best Buy but kind of got cut short looking at headphones due to sales-people swarming me (and odly enough telling me to look online and elsewhere for headphones) Red Deer to be more precise. I'm thinking of going to a music store to see if they have any decent headphones.

You can try Parkland Audio & Music:

G8 5550-45th St
Red Deer, Alberta
T4N ILI Canada

p. 403.309.9499

Says they carry Stanton, Behringer, AKG, Sennheiser, and Pioneer headphones. They might have something. An AKG K240 is a gem around $100 USD.

Avoid HMV, they look overpriced. Visions Electronics looks like it might have a decent selection; I see Audio-Technica, Shure, Sennheiser in their lineup, and it looks like you have one locally:

2119 50 Avenue
Red Deer, AB T4R 1Z4, Canada

(403) 340-1750

But that's all I'm Googling for you: The rest is up to you! :P

Good luck,

Boz

If I might ask, why did you pick the HD 438? They're supposedly good headphones, but at about $180 retail, there are better options available for the money, in my opinion. The cable is detachable from the headphone, and retail includes two different lengths from what I can see, but I'd check with Sennheiser to make sure it will accommodate whatever male-to-male you want to use; it may not be a 3.5mm jack on the headphone itself. well its not really $180 more like $100 with free shipping. and i havent pick it up yet(still looking around). I know headphones.com will ship hear but thats another $40 and thats without the VAT. I could always pick up the hd 448 but the cable is alittle long to me I think, and their is probably no easy to make it smaller or replace it with another cable. well tbh, i am interested in the hd 439 and that is similar to the 438,but like i said the problem is the shipping and vat.

Well let's talk for a minute, then. What are you using these headphones for, exactly? Gaming, movies, music, traveling, exercise (I'm guessing no to the latter)? For example, I have two pair of headphones, one for gaming, and one for music on-the-go. I rarely listen to music unless I'm doing something else, so I almost always listen on home speakers rather than headphones. So I bought a gaming headphone rather than a high-end headphone.

I just want to make sure you're getting the best headphones for your dollar and for whatever purpose for which you intend to use them.

I see from your profile it looks like you're in Sri Lanka, so I understand availability may be constrained. Are you limited to Sennheiser? Do you have any retailers where you might try a few different headphones before you buy?

Happy gaming,

Boz

They look pretty good, actually. They're not well-known state-side since they're not available here, but you can read the Head-Fi reviews here. I have a giant head and wear glasses, so one of the reviews threw me off personally, but it looks like they sound great at the right price, which is about $100. It's your call.
