[QUOTE="Animorganimate"][QUOTE="mfsa"] how many people thought diablo 2 was terrible at level 1?
...and how many of you thought it was awesome at level 75?
...and how many of you are idiots who don't know how to judge things properly?
try and remember that hellgate is all about:
- developing and building a character who advances in power and becomes awesome, and
- playing with friends
in the demo we do neither - you have to play the medium/high end game with friends, or be able to imagine what it will feel like, before you can judge the game properly - that's why the demo was so bad, it's a terrible representation of the final game... it should really only be used to judge basic technical aspects and gameplay mechanics
i am happy to admit the game has plenty of flaws, and the jump to 3D has really done the game no favours, but it still has everything that made diablo 2 great and, in some cases, improves upon them

This whole comparison to Diablo II's first level is crap. I loved Dibalo II's first level. It was just as addicting as the whole of the game. Hell, the first quest, the Den of Evil, in Diablo II was a great opening quest. Hellgate's demo is not exciting, and of course it's easy to say,"Just wait and see, it'll be good, I promise...the demo is not a representation of the game at all, in fact, it's a different game, blah, yadda, pthfff." We all know what a demo is there for. We know it's to show the style of game-play, and unfortunately, the demo is showing off a craptastic game at this point. I can hit a zombie with a two foot blade from ten feet away. Really?! Are they serious? That's poor coding right there. Basically, a demo is supposed to make you want the game even more. FSS has accomplished just the opposite with many people. This game cannot be compared to Diablo II. It does not improve on anything from Diablo II. And having to defend this game by saying,"Well, you have to play with friends and devote hours to it before it starts getting good", is ridiculous and you know it.
the only argument i can see here is bad demo = bad game
but character development rpgs really can't be judged by level 1-4, can they? nor can you truly judge a multiplayer game through the single player experience
at level 1 you're wearing rags, you have no stats, no skills, your character looks like crap, there's vew enemies and they're generic melee attackers, there's no bosses
at level 50 you're resplendent in power armour with a custom built character with rare and exotic items you've devoted time and energy to getting, you've got a character you like and you're slaughtering huge swarms and massive bosses with your cadre of friends for awesome loot, to make your characters even better
that's what diablo 2 was, that's what hellgate is
it's a bad demo, in fact it's a terrible demo - and i utterly picked it apart in this post but to say you can judge the final game by the demo is really like trying to judge a marriage using a date - there is much, much more to experience beyond the initial taste, and you say that's ridiculous - why? why is it ridiculous to claim that the final game will be better than the demo? that's fundamentally how character development rpgs work, they get better as you develop your character, and they're always more fun with friends
I understand what you're saying, and maybe ridiculous was the wrong word. To clarify, I am still buying this game, becuase I am holding on to some hope and faith that FSS has something more up their sleeves. I have been waiting for this game for what seems like forever, and I am not about to throw all that away based on a demo. But, since a demo is supposed to represent the game, and I believe that what I downloaded was a demonstration of a very lack luster game, it worries me a bit. But I will reserve total judgement until the final game is released next week.
