I am aware of the history of this title (bit of a flop, servers closed early this year), however given it can be picked up for $15 (AUD) and has 64 bit support, is it worth picking up for the single player alone? Are there private servers out there and if so, are fees required to play online?

Thanks in advance.

While I personally enjoyed HG:L there will be a lot of people that will come in here and say otherwise. I enjoy gear drops like Diablo and killing the same boss over and over again to see what I can get.

There is no private server capability that I know of. A google search might come up with a mod or something but I doubt it.

Its one of the biggest flops of this gen imo... You would be better off replayig (or playing if you havn't played it before) Diablo 2, before you ever consider getting this game.

If 2 hours are worth the money for you, then yes. After those 2 hours it's not exaggerated to say you've already seen everything and will probably put it away in a shelf and never play it again.

While the game was a massive disappointment for me, I agree with these sentiments. The game can be quite fun, though it certainly has it's flaws. For a cheap price it's definitely worth a play through, or two :)

To me, if you can get the game now for $30 or less, it'll definitely please you.

I'd say look for better games for that price. It was a bit fun for the money, but it could've been a lot better.

They closed down servers, so you'd be playing offline. It's very unpolished and they never patched it up, stick with diablo 2 imo.

The game is incredibly polished - I bought it for $10, and having heard only bad things about it, was absolutely staggered by the production values. The engine, patched to 1.2, is very well optimized, and I would say to any person who thinks of himself as being a gamer: absolutely buy this program.

Hellgate is still worth it for 10-15 bucks but multi was the best part. Or might just hold on for Borderlands its the same type of game and looks really good.

Polished? There were so many bugs you shouldn't have been surprised if something like the walls turning pink or water turning to zombie corpses happened...

Have you played since the game was patched? They did manage to patch it up very well...doesn't fix it more fundamental flaws but from a bug perspective it was pretty good.

I just played this game. Patched to 1.2 the game ran flawlessly. I never encountered a single bug - ever. The game's production values were also shockingly high. I don't know what game you played, but it wasn't the one that I played. This game is easily worth ten dollars. Easily.

I'm not sure about patches, it's been a long while since I touched it, but I remember pretty clearly the message "End of Chapter 5" at the end of chapter 4, placeholder/missing textures everywhere (a book with the form of an obelisk and an invisible rifle, lol), the whole "Hell" part designed like WoW's Desolace: plain, grey, flat and half of the walls with no collision...

Also, from the looks of their servers' status I think it's safe to say they didn't fix enough :P

It was never as bad as you describe (was in beta, and even then wasn't that bad). The biggest issue with the game was a nasty memory leak that plagued the game in beta and for the first month or so. After a few patches the game was ok as far as bugs go...and by 1.2 it was relatively solid. Anyways, there's no sense talking about how buggy the game was then, as the patches exist now and anybody who buys it now can just install the patches.

The game was alright. I never did think it was terrible like some people did. However, if it has no online capabilities now, I probably wouldn't bother.

Did the game fail because they tried to charge monthly fees for a non-MMORPG, or because it was a garbage game to begin with? I never got it because of a combination of these two.

Well maybe a combination. You could still play online without a fee, but for "premium content" it would cost you. Problem is, that turned a lot of people off from the game before they even bought it. And the game itself didn't have enough content to justify the price of a sub. The game wasn't terrible, but the levels were very linear and all pretty much looked the same. The actual gameplay however was pretty cool.

It was a combination of many things, and I think that the fee really hurt it (it was basically setup like GW except with a monthly charge). The problem was even further exacerbated by the fact the content they promised was always late, and nearly a year into the game's life they had only managed to release a single new area. Compound all of that with a terrible launch (bugs), a lot of weird design choices (big gun down, that stupid RTS mission), repetitive content (recycling too many areas), lackluster presentation (especially boss fights), boring skill trees, and some other issues the game just pretty much crumbled. Underneath it all the game is quite fun, but I think it was just such a massive disappointment people were left pretty pissed off...then to turn around and ask for $10 a month on top of it all...well lol...it was enough. The forums were a riot though...really a special time/place on the gaming intrawebs :P Ahhh...I can still hear the founders (people who paid $150 upfront for a "lifetime" subscription) cries to this day

Yeah, in the online/MMO market, paying for a lifetime sub is not a wise thing to do. Of course, if I had that option with WoW, I'd have saved a lot of money lol. But the MMO market is too unpredictable to justify that cost upfront on launch of a new game. Too many have been canceled.

I realize Hellgate wasn't an MMO, but the principle is the same.

I think LOTRO has a lifetime membership and that's the only time I've seen it work fairly well.

If it's cheap and if you generally enjoy Action RPG's, I'd say go for it. Don't expect the next big thing or 'the true heir of Diablo'. But you will get lots of demon killing, loot gathering and leveling up, as long as that's what you looking for you could do a lot worse for a bargin bin buy.

I bought it at launch and played it all the way through via single player the first time..... I can't say how many hours it took me, but probably around the 50hr range. The multiplayer was where it REALLY shined, but I thought I got my $50 worth in the single player game. I honestly had a blast all the way through. I haven't looked it up lately but I wouldn't be surprised if there are some private servers out there, maybe even a community patch (It had a pretty dedicated fanbase). If someone could come back and say at least private servers or a lan patch exists I'm going to install it again.

Wow - safe to call it a polarised title. I did end of buying it late last night. A bottle of merlot and online shopping for computer games is good for the collection but bad for the credit card! Cheers to all. 8)

Didn't help they were totally focusing on selling life time memberships when game had serious memory leak, tunnels that were dead ends, ect.. And people always complaint about too few and boring tilesets. Game failed because of greed and bad management. A good company would of make this game popular.

I have this thing where during Halloween I celebrate by getting the moodiest/scariest game I can find and play all geek-horrored out .. it's all in jest and play and I usually get a good bit of amusement out of it.

I bought Dead Space this way and it became my game of the year for 2008.

I also bought Hellgate: London this way .. I was all geek into the dark exploration of London and all the weirdies you get to kill and loot from .. I never took it seriously as an online game .. though it has great potential for group play (preferably with known friends).

My two cents would be to pick it up, see if you like the fiction, and maybe explore some of the books for a more rounded view of the lore.
