Don't you think that a Windows based PC for a seven year old is overkill?

Besides safety issues, do you think she'll be able to properly maintain and operate a PC (especially one installed with Windows XP)?

I suggest instead going for the ASUS Eee notebook PC. $500 AU and its designed specifically for kids and those whose computer skills aren't up to scratch (or those who need an ultra mobile computer).

I just can't picture a 7 year old requiring the computing power exceeding that of a notebook. That Eee PC offers everything a 7 year old needs in under $500.

The cheapest I can make a desktop (with WinXP, LCD, KB/M) is around $800 AU. Even then, quality of essential parts such as the power supply and motherboard will be comprimised.

Something like this should fit the bill (I'm not using the price list from MSY):
Intel Celeron 420
Asrock 1333-D667 945G motherboard (if MSY don't have this in stock, find an alternative but make sure it *DOES NOT* use a SiS or VIA chipset)
512MB of DDR2-667
Cheap case with cheap included PSU (I'm telling you, go for that Eee PC...)
80GB+ HDD SATAII
DVD-RW drive
MS Windows XP (***Recommended to use Linux instead of Windows***)
LCD Monitor

Alternatively, if all they have for socket 775 mobos are VIA/SiS chipsets, look for:
AMD Sempron LE 1100
AM2 motherboard that *DOES NOT* have a SiS/VIA chipset

dude, go buy one of those handheld "leapfrog" things or something. way too young to have his own computer.

i think what got me so into computers was that my family never had one until i was like 13, so i never had access to them, which only intrigued me MORE.

hold off on his own computer. besides it being a bad idea in general, you will train him to take technology for granted.
