i guess i will have to try it. Can my ISP help me or is it not their problem? Also i have been looking on google and people have being saying your computer doesn't have to be wireless is that true? Becasue both of my computers are wireless?

ASRCSR
Course the computer doesn't have to be wireless. Shouldn't matter if they are wireless though, unless you have some type of wi-fi security software. I don't think your ISP will help, because their job is just to make sure your modem has a good connection and that you have a stable line, they probably don't care what's inside your network.

Ugh, I hate networking, by far the most annoying thing about computers. What works for some people, won't work for others (due to hardware and software differences). I like to compare it to Black Magic, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

What worked for me is putting both computers under the home network and then just telling each computer to share one of its folders over the network. Works fine for me. I believe you just:

Right Click -> Properties > Enable Sharing (or similar wording).

That was the first thing he did. (And I love networking, it's so awesome, subnetting, samba, vlan trunking, knowing the insides of computer is nothing compared to networking :D, though I dislike diagnosing problems when I am not actually there)

my network is a home network. They are on the same workgroup. I tried the IP thing and it is not working. Whenever i go to my network on the Windows 7 machine i get three choices Computers (I just get the name of the computer i am on, i guessing if my network worked i would see my other computer), Media devices (I click on the option and WMP opens up) and finally Network infrastructure which i am guessing is my router and it says can not disconnect because it is busy. So that is where i am right now.

I really appreciate the help i am getting.

ASRCSR

Are you connecting directly or going through a router of some sort?

If it's direct i suspect your network ain't really set to private, i recently did the same between two of my PCs and it reset to public every time it disconnected.

Also do this: right cllick my computer > properties > remote settings > remote > Allow remote connections from other computers (second radio button). Do this on both computers.

Make sure both computers have passworded admin level account.

Start > Remote desktop (type in search)
Type in the name you gave the PC (best to set it to something short, you can find it by: right click my computer > properties > advanced system settings > computer name)
Then logon with the admin account.

I think that's everything i did so if that dosn't work i don't know what will.

Wait, why are you launching RDP? He is trying to share files, not remote desktop it.

Both computers need an admin level passworded acount, not sure if this is true for sharing folders but it is for remote desktop which will do the same thing (it'll probably be easier too). Also note you ccan't be logged on to the same computer twice,, i reccomend just setting up another temporary one to avoid messing about with logging in and out.

Sharing files seems to be acting like an ass. RDC allows you to do the same thing it it may actually work. Also i set up the same thing between a Vista and Server 08 PC a couple days ago. RDC also prevents messing about with copying data to your sharing folders setting individual folders to share, much quicker just to copy and paste between the two machines.

Turn it on. You need passworded admin accounts to share.

What's RDC, do you mean RDP? How is transferring files the same as remote desktoping it? My server runs server 2k8 r2 on the host os, which does nothing basically, I don't want to do anything big in Windows, but file transferring works. Remote desktop is enabled, but I still don't see how RDP is related to transferring files. Maybe I'm not getting something :?

RDC = Remote Desktop Connection It probably changed it's name at some point, a lot of things have done that from XP to Vista. RDC allows you to transfer large files. You can simply copy and paste files through like it's another drive. It's not exactly the same but you still get your files transferred so it doesn't matter, saves annoying proxy copying to sharing folders too.

But that's a stupid way to do it if I'm honest. Oh and it's actually called RDP (remote desktop protocal, is the version Windows uses :P) I mean who wants to remote desktop a computer each time they want to change a file? I just map network the drive.

*shrug* I prefer using the program name than the protocol name, the protocol by itself dosn't really get you anywhere....

Thing is i don't have a computer running constantly that i can use as a NAS, so running a network drive on one of them dosn't really make sense. There's a couple less mouse clicks if i just remote connect.

Well it will just have a red X on the mapped drive when it is not available, and when it becomes available again, you can just click it :)

EDIT: He can't do that because he plans on streaming the content through the network.(Your RDP file transfer idea)

So i got my laptop (XP) to work beautifully on the network, but i still can't get the desktop XP to work for some reason.
