prolly good to go with an hd 4850. although if you have a few bucks extra, the 4870 is a nice purchase.

if you absolutely must go nvidia, the 9800 gtx is great for the price.

What is your budget for a graphics card? I think you will need a PSU upgrade as well because the one that is powering your computer with the 8400 gs is most likely not very powerful and can't handle good card.

Go to the computer store and ask about the

ATI 4850($200) and the Nvidia 8800 gt ($139+)

If they are too expensive for you, ask about the Nvidia 8800 gs and the Nvidia 9600 gt which are cheaper than the 2 above but not as powerful.

Also ask for a Power supply unit that can handle the card you have chosen. For the ATI 4850 and Nvidia 8800 gt I would say you ask for a good 500 watt power supply. The other 2, ask for at least a 400 watt power supply.

If you are really afraid of putting the parts in yourself see if the computer store can do it for you, but it will cost you more money.

I would recommend the 8800 gt because you said you don't want it that expensive but still want a powerful card.

Yeah, if you only want to play those games and play them good then get the 8800GT. The ATI 4850 is a good card and should max out those games, but not sure you want that expensive of a card.

Like most people said it depends on your budget. But if it was me, I would get the ATi Radeon HD 4850. You can order online from Newegg.com for about $150 with mail-in-rebate (or $160 with a free copy of The Witcher). BestBuy has them on sale for $150 (not sure if this offer expired or not). You may need to upgrade your power supply though.

That's a great deal for an HD4850. I wish they gave me a free copy of the Witcher with my HD4870, but that would be greedy. :P

The 8600GT is pretty good yeah, I have that. I can run Crysis on medium on 1024x768 with an average of about 50-60 FPS. But, I would recommend you getting the 8800GT since it's only a bit more expensive I think and it's way more powerful.
