I have a 360 elite and a 19'' Hanns G HX192 (D) monitor with built-in speakers (which I don't ever use, I use regular PC speakers) I have a regular TV so I want to hook it up to my PC monitor. I have an HDMI to DVI-D cable. It hooks up fine to my monitor.

I'm under the impression that HDMI includes sound and it should work with my monitor. Here's another problem-I don't know how to even use my monitor speakers. I did some searching and even looked at the disc it came with, no drivers. Atleast not to my knowledge.

ASSUMING I get the speakers to work, should the sound just work once plugged in?

yes hdmi is USUALLY sound and video, as far as i know it is always both except on the xbox 360, so there is an adapter that plugs into the normal audio video port, it has the red and white and an optical audio connections, so there is nothing wrong with your speakers but u do need to get a red and white audio cable to connect your speakers

Ah, that explains it. So I need a female/male red and white cable? One to attach to the xbox sound cables and one to plug into the speakers or whatever? Thanks.

PS. I also can't get my monitor speakers to work even with my PC...

HDMI will always have the video and the audio, even on the 360. There is no reason Microsoft would send the video digitally, but send the audio over an analog connections with the composite RCA outputs.

Every monitor with speakers I've seen has an extra port in the back for audio. And it's usually the standard heaphone looking cord (not sure of the technical term).

However, that doesn't help you much, because I'm not sure how you'd extract the audio from the HDMI cable before converting the video to DVI.

Does the 360 Elite have the alternate Microsoft connection, where you could use a different cord with it? Maybe you could use the HDMI cord in addition to the regular cable with the audio.

I don't know what you mean by alternate Microsoft connection. And what regular cable with audio? The cable from the 360 to the TV audio/video?

Ha sorry...I'm not a n00b but only with this kind of stuff and networking...

Wow, I had no idea. That's pretty ridiculous. I shouldn't have assumed Microsoft would never make such a half-assed attempt to implement HDMI.

I do have a regular stereo system basically under my xbox...what cables do I need with those? I'm not good with this stuff. Ask me how to program something or how to get a broken computer running again and it's not a problem. Ask me how to hook a 360 up to a monitor and I'll stare at you like you didn't say it in English...

Now, I don't have an Elite, but what I think wolf is saying is that you can use the HDMI->DVI adapter to get video to your monitor, no problem.

For the audio, you'll need to use the adapter that he linked that routes the audio through the RCA cables, and not the HDMI. The RCA cables, commonly red and white plugs, can either go to a speaker setup that has RCA input....

or you might be able to get something like this to change the RCA cables to the heaphones jack and plug it into your monitor, if that is what your monitor needs for audio. You'll have to look:

I did get the video to work no problem, that's not the issue.

And yes, my monitor does have the headphone jack. Thanks!
