I'm going to make a new rig for gaming. Mostly playing WoW. I'll be playing CS:Global Offense, Diablo 3 and Dota 2 when they come out. I just wanted to get some help on building my rig first before I went and ordered anything. This is what I'm looking at right now. I left out the power supply because I'm not sure what to use. I'm also not sure about the sound card. Might leave it out for now and add it in at a later time. My budget is roughly $1000(including $100 for windows 7). Mobo: ASUS P8P67 CPU: I5 2500k Vid card: Radeon 6870 Sound: Asus Xonar DX PCIe 7.1 RAM: 2x4(8GB) Kingston HDD: Western digital 1tb 7200 rpm Case: NZXT GAMMA Classic Series GAMA-001BK Mid Tower

USD? And, do you use a headset? Cause if you don't, a sound card isn't really necessary (just use optical audio).

This build has better graphics and future proof features for 2012. I left out the Case tower, for your personal preference. The Rosewill ARMOR ATX-Mid Tower ($79.99) has awesome cooling for it's price. The NZXT gamma is good enough for it's cheap price, but eventually you'll have to get a better one. The Rosewill THOR V2 Gaming Full ATX Tower ($129.99) is also fantastic if you're looking for a modest full tower, and i"m personnally a fan of the HAF series.

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K ($219.99)
MoBo: ASRock Z68 EXTREME3 GEN3 ($129.99)
RAM: G.Skill 4GB (2x2) DDR3 1333MHz ($29.99)
GPU: GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6950 1GB ($239.99)
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB ($59.99)
Disc: LITE-ON 24x DVD-RW ($18.99)
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer Series 750W 80+ Bronze ($94.99)
OS: 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium OEM ($91.99)
------------------------------
$885.92

What Blue posted looks good, but, may as well get the 2GB model, if you're going to get a 6950. May help, in the future.

I really like your build. I'll probably do the 2gb if I'm going to go with the 6950. Also, how come only 1333 RAM? I was always told that 1600 is better? I'll probably beef it up to 8GB no matter what though.

RAM speed has little effect on performance, especially with gaming. If you use a good headset, you would probs benefit from a sound card.

So if the 1600 was on sale and was cheaper than the 1333 I should get it though? Right?

Just remember to stick with AMD GPUs. They offer much better price/performance ratio than Nvidia GPUs. And AMD GPUs offer Morphological Anti-Aliasing which Nvidia GPUs do not.

BTW, Nvidia Physx is pretty much irrelevant.

If you are talking about a sound card, I would first try the onboard sound card that comes with your motherboard, and see if you like the sound. Get a quality motherboard. ASUS makes the best motherboards.

What kind of headset do you use? Are you using normal headphones or one of the surround sound headphones that uses a USB connection?

If they are normal headphones then you will want a sound card. Though you could hold off on getting one and put that money towards another component like a better gpu or mobo. You could use the mobo's onboard sound until you save up for a sound card since the sound card isn't necessary for the system to run. Just know that with a decent set of headphones a sound card can make a big difference in audio quality.

If you are using a headset that has a USB connection then don't get a sound card. Most headsets with USB connections have their own built in sound card so you wouldn't be using the sound card in your PC or the mobo's onboard sound.

I have a "HP Premium Digital Headset" it's called. It uses a USB connection.
