I have a 256K dsl connection. Yet, when I try to play games such as Call of Duty 2 online, the ping goes as high as 999. By browsing through numerous sites, I found a solution, but it lowered the ping to 870 (which still is quite high). The games therefore lag a lot.I am able to play MMORPGs quite well, and they run smoothly which has led me to believe, that I get ping issues only on FPS.

I live in pakistan (asia) and these are the pings I get when I connect to servers of Turkey and China. Is this normal?

Okay, now when i logged on to an asian server (Turkey) the ping was ranging from 576-590. Is this normal for 256K DSL?

When I connect it says "connecting through PPPoE (WAN Miniport)". Probably this might help.

What programs are running in the backround? Do you have Limewire Bittorent Ect. Just end all the backround services you can. All the ones in you taskbar.. That should help. The ping is how far away you are from a server so if you if you are in turkey and you log into american server the ping will be high. Do me a favor go to www.pcpitstop.com and click internet speed- then click ping test- then click run ping test..

Wait here is a link just run this.. http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/pinger.asp

and tell me what you score.. You could just have a really bad internet connection..

Where do you live? Usually location is very significant. Try playing servers that has individuals that play in the same country as you.

Ping is the tim it takes for a packet to be sent to a server and the time it takes to get back.

1. Fast internet connection.

2. Also playing on servers that are close to you. Preferably in your country.

3. Don't run programs in the background that take up CPU or bandwidth.

It could be your computer. MMORPGs dont require a high-end PC to play it but games such as counter strike do. I have the same problem as you do but then bought a new graphics card, ram and cpu and the ping lowered a lot.

I live in Pakistan. The local counter-strike servers which I pinged give a responce time of 19 ms (I think it is good). Though sadly, no one here plays call of duty 2. Only one who do are those in Turkey, China etc. . The ping test site said that the pings might be high for the site is based in USA, and I live in Pakistan, which is pretty far off.

But even for turkish servers and even chinese servers( china is a direct neighbour of Pakistan) the ping is above 500. Is this normal, for these countries are also in Asia?

Even when I ping Google Pakistan (my country), the average ping according to command prompt, is 165. However, I noted a strange thing: when I pinged this site when a download was on, the response was 165ms and when I stopped the download I still had the same response time, that is 165ms.

And yah, I close all background applications before running multiplayer games.

I do have a rig which can run any game with medium settings. It's not something to boast about but certainly runs games quite well.

Even in India (direct Pakistan neighbour) the ping of counter-strike servers is toooo high:

Pinging 202.63.160.186 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 202.63.160.186: bytes=32 time=506ms TTL=114
Reply from 202.63.160.186: bytes=32 time=511ms TTL=114

Reply from 202.63.160.186: bytes=32 time=506ms TTL=114

Ping statistics for 202.63.160.186:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 506ms, Maximum = 512ms, Average = 508ms

This is what it says at command prompt. And I had no downloads etc. running in background.

And if distance is what matters, then why doesn't the Turkish servers have more Ping response times:

Pinging 62.68.199.146 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 62.68.199.146: bytes=32 time=291ms TTL=117

This test was done on a Turkish server of Call Of Duty 2.

You could try running a trace route...it wouldn't really help but you could see if there is a hop that is being delayed then see if your ISP can do anything about it.

Get the IP address of the servers and type this into the command prompt without quotes "tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" Where the x's are, put the IP address of the servers.
