Seeing how this games popularity is based on its online I can see the millions of people who play the component spending time to master it. That being saidwould a newcomer to the game like me be able to function well in an online match? Or will i just be brutally owned. How long will it take me to be able to at least keep up a fair fight against some of these warcraft players especially the ones in DotA?

Also hows the community? is it like WoW's wherethere are tards about almost everwhere or just a few?

Ill tell you first hand that they're dicks. I was in a clan and everything and player probably a million DOTA games. If you come out and die, they will request to kick you immedietly. If you're already good, then no problem you'll have fun.

As a newcomer, there's a good chance that you'll be brutally owned. People are okay in general, but like any online games, there will be the few a-holes. You can practice against the PC. Try the DoTa All Stars AI Map. Play it LAN and set other players as the computer to have the AI properly work. If you fare well with the AI, you'll be good online. http://www.getdota.com/ai_maps

You'll probably be destroyed in regular wc3, but you have a chance in dota since its not as complex.

I also understand that in DotA you get a "Hero" and from my experience in the SP demo he levels up just like in any RPG, but is this the case in DotA? Or do all players start out with the same level in the beginning of the match? Is the "Hero" the only character I control in the DotA match?

Huh? Dota is a wacraft 3 mod. There is no demo. And to answer the question, you get one hero that you level up throughout that one game and buy items to win. Nothing is saved.

It still depends on the player and country though. Here in my country, you'll most likely get 87%-92% of getting players with a rotten attitude in a game. Sad part is, some are also underage.

And a good chunk of that majority doesn't even know how to play warcraft 3. Just the DotA custom map.

I think he means the single player demo of Warcraft III, not DoTA.

Just like any other RTS online game. If you just bought a game like Starcraft, unwrapped the CD and went straight to multiplayer and joined in on a 3v3 you would get crushed and your team would hate you. Gotta practice first so you have a handle on what to do. Not a super overly complicated game you just have to be cautious to not die.

Community wise, it is somewhat "brutal" as in most people being arrogant/ignorant wastes of the material they are made of.

There are some nice people in ther esomewhere tho, but you have to find them, and then add to the list of preferred players, or simply remember them ^^

Saying you are new does tend to help against some of the halfas*edness on there.

Starting off in Warcraft 3/Dota isn't worth it. Everyone that plays Dota pretty much plays exclusively Dota 24/7 and since it's one small map - they've memorized every little possible thing about it and know exactly what they're doing.

Warcraft 3 online is nonexistent, more like DoTA online. I can never find a normal game :|. I just abandoned it and that's why I play more Starcraft with BGH maps.

If you want to try DotA I suggest you wait for League of Legends. Its a free2play game from the makers of DotA. To be released pretty soon it will attract new players so you would have a bigger chance to enjoy the game.

You'll pretty much get brutally owned. Everyone is an elitist dick and will request you be kicked if you die. Also if you join a game and start downloading the map that's a red flag indicator you're a noob and you'll be kicked. If you go to the download websites to download the map ahead of time, you'll get in, be brutally owned, then kicked.

I would just get Starcraft honestly.

90% of the time when you try to download the map you will get kicked.

The other 9% they will kick you when you die.

the last 1% might maybe (small chance) be nice people or people that don't care. The DotA community is on a alltime low.

The Dota community is far from a friendly one. If you suck, you get kicked, and the process will repeat over and over until you become good. I don't think its worth playing. However if you have a group of friends that all want to get into it, you can practice with them, and it should be alright.

What is Warcraft 3 online? I never heard of it.

I only know DotA Online. No, wlel, there are some tower defense games, but most people don't seem to skirmish either cuz they suck at micro or are too lazy.

You obviously don't play dota. It's every bit as competitive as the regular game.

You'll get crushed in dota even worse than regular wc3.

I would suggest getting the AI maps to practice on as the AI map is a good one.

Also, to the extremely ignorant poster who said that the regular wc3 is non-existent online, wrong. There are tons of ladder games being played all the time.

Well, If you try and play competitively, you'll probably lose. My first few matches (and only VS matches) on vanilla Warcraft 3 ended in bloody defeat or my opponent lags out. I spent hours upon hours playing custom games though. I loved Tower Defense and the 'survival' games.
