I have a laptop that lets me watch dvd movies, and I could also burn video files from my hardrive onto a blank dvd.

But there is no simple step for me to copy a dvd movie that I rented !? ( There is no option to let me put the dvd movie file onto my hardrive )

I have a Vista laptop with the latest version of Windows Media Player. What additional software do I need to purchase ?

I'm pretty sure "renting" a movie then making a copy of it is illegal.

Now, assuming that you wanted to make a "back-up" of a DVD you've purchased and not "rented" I recommend CloneDVD, in a simple step or two process you can rip the DVD ontop your harddrive then swap the DVD with a blank one and burn.

The way I understood it, Vista was designed with the MPAA in mind. It was supposed to have loads of DRM features preventing the naughty badness of backing up legally purchased content. And yet, 90% of malware will still run on Vista. Hmmm...makes ya think, doesn't it? I for one, am glad Microsoft is looking out for their loyal license holders...protecting us from ourselves, lest we do something completely wacky... :D

For backup purposes I use DVDShrink. It's the easiest tool ever to make backup copies.
