I just bought a 2 GB stick of RAM to upgrade to 4 GB total. I put it in and in my computer it says I only have 3.5 GB installed. How did this happen? Could the stick be defected or did I just **** something up? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the wonders of having a 32-bit OS, it won't be able to read much more RAM than that. Just be happy it wasn't too expensive, and that you got an extra 1.5GB at least.

If you are running XP then it will only recognize upto 3.5GB of RAM , the rest is basically waste.

While you are correct, it is not because of XP, it's because it is a 32 bit OS. 32 bit OSs only can observe 3.5 gigs of ram. 64 bit OSs, like Vista 64 bit, can see more. I'm also rather sure that XP has a 64 bit version.

Yes you are right. I should have been more clear about 32 VS 64 bit.

yep ther is a 64bit XP. It handles around 128gb at max, like Ultimate Vista 64bit
