No you don't. I've been using WinRAR for years without paying. Sure, they say "40 day evaluation" or something like that, but you don't need to pay after 40 days. They just want you to. :)
it never really charges you nor should you take it off just right click on the zipped file when you want to unzip and it will give you choices where to and youll never see those messages

If you are annoyed with WinRAR get 7-Zip instead, its hosted on sourceforge.net and compresses and decompresses things extremely rapidly compared to the default software included with Windows.
