I just mounted a new seagate sata300 hard drive in my hard drive bay and my motherboard only supports sata150 i think. I need to change it to sata150 but i don't know how. There is a jumper slot on the back but annoyingly it's not a switch so i have no idea how to operate it. Someone please enlighten me!

When you connect your SATA 300 HDD to your SATA port, your motherboard doesn't detect that ?

Well i haven't actually turned the pc on yet.. I'll turn it on now and see what happens. It's in one of the 2 slave sata ports (i have 4 sata ports alltogether). Should this work ok?

pull the drive back out completely. On the label somewhere, there should be a diagram. normally there's *trying to remember from memory* 9 pins on the back of the drive, set up in a 2x5 pattern with 1 pin missing. There should be a little plastic gizmo, that slides over any 1x2 selection. On the label, it should indicate which pins to cover with the jumper to relegate the drive into sata150 mode. (As well as offering several other combinations.)

good luck. its not that hard to decipher once you look at the diagram and find the silly little plastic gizmo thats used to set the jumpers. (it should already be attached to the back of the drive in a neutral way, that doesnt effect any drive settings.)

locate your sata jumper on your mobo if you have one. (use your manual to find it)

then pull the jumper of the 2pins its sitting on and put it on the pins that the manual says you have to.
thats the basic rule of jumpers anyway..

didnt know their was sata jumpers
your mobo should automatically run the drive at sata150 speed though

I'm on there and the disk has showed up. What do i do now to get it working? My other disk has a letter and my 250gig just says unallocated. What do i have to do to get this set up as a second storage hard drive? I will be installing games on it mostly.

It says the drive is online and it's basic. When i right click on it it doesn't say format anywhere. Just says 'convert to dynamic disk' whatever that means.

It says 'new partition' but it doesn't say format? Shall i create a partition? I'm using xp professional by the way.

The other disk however when i right click in the blue bar area has a greyed out format option. Do i have to create a partition before i can do all this?

Haha i hate them now! I can't leave my window open at night without a huge one flying in and scaring me! Infact theres one sitting on my lampshade right now, it's been there for 2 nights now but it's not flying at me so i don't care. it's not dead either because it has moved quite a bit.

But yea, because of moths i have to suffer and boil to death in my room at night! :( even when i have no other lights on the light of my computer screen attracts them.
