how do you estimate the framerate in a game?

I often hear people say "i got 30 fps at medium..etc" how do you do that? do i need a program or what? I'd like to check the fps in some games, too. thanks

Install FRAPS for free and it will tell you.

XFire also has built in FPS display.

My contact lenses have an on screen HUD that tells me the framerate of anything I look at.

Lots of games have a console. You can normally put in a code to display fps. E.g. Crysis, HL2, Oblivion etc
