I want to record some of my game play for reference and to see how I can improve. Prehaps I will put some on Youtube for friends to watch. What do you think is a better method for recording... A) A ingame or game recording programme B) A video camera

I use CamStudio, because it's free and fully functional.

Although the full version of FRAPs is better.

EDIT: video camera = no. pretty awful quality for that kind of thing.

Fraps works well, but you can also use Xfire because it supports recording and automatic upload to your Xfire account online. It's pretty nice.

dont use FRAPS or at least not at first. if you are playing TF2 and most other games, they support an in engine demo recording which lets you record the entire match and you cant play it back like a replay from any angle and it only takes like 20mb to record an hour of gameplay! then once you have done that, get the angles you want or just your same fps view and record with FRAPS. that way you want have FRAPS slowing you down during your initial gameplay.

VirtualDub is free, and it works well for re-recording & compression. I use it to redo Fraps so I can upload them.

The Full Version of Fraps is only $37. That's cheaper than some new games that go for $50 up to $99 (for collector's editions). That's less than 6 hours of working if you make minimum wage. It isn't like your buying AutoCAD for hundreds of dollars: $37 is very reasonable.

And xfire works fine for me, so i dont see any reason to spend $37 when what i use now works perfectly fine.

I record my gameplay in my brain. If I screw up on something, I remember not to do it again and I improve. I personally don't need a video to watch of how I play and screw up to help fix things....

But if you want to record your games, I suppose the only program I know of is FRAPS. I have never used it, so I don't know if it's good or not. I'm sure there are plenty of other programs out there that can record your gameplay, but FRAPS is the only one I know about.
