Hello :)

I'm getting the basic 13"MacBookPro sometime next week and I was wondering, how good is it for gaming? To be honest, I haven't played video games in a while (didn't have time then lost interest)but I still want to playDiablo3 during my spare time because I used to be a big fan ofDiablo2 back in the day. Do you think I could run it?

Specs (copied from the Apple website):

  • 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
  • Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
  • 4GB 1600MHz memory
  • 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive
  • IntelHDGraphics 4000

Thank you

So I wouldn't be able to run Diablo 3 on minimum? That'll probably be the only game I ever play on it seeing as I haven't played anything in the past 18 months or so.

Minimum settings and very low resolution should get you a tolerable framerate. Playing minimum settings at low res will be pretty eww, though...

It really surprises me that people even ask this. Mac computers are overpriced pieces of sh!t. End of story. Don't buy them, no matter what you want to do with them. How much is that laptop you're looking at? Knowing Apple, it's probably... $1000? At least? More? And with onboard Intel graphics. In case you didn't know, that means it doesn't have a video card. Which means it will struggle to do ANYTHING that renders real time video. Seriously, that thing will be lucky to get 30 fps at minimum settings on 4 year old games. You can get a freakin HP office notebook for like $300 at best buy that will outperform that. Unless you consider looking like a hipster at starbucks to be a selling point, there is literally no reason to buy anything from Apple. You purchase an Apple product, you have been ripped off. Period.

Edit: Just looked at that site Jiggly linked to, and there ya go. They tested an ASUS with the same Intel Graphics chip (the HD4000), and a better CPU (i7) than the macbook you're looking at. It got 35fps at 1366x768 on low settings... in new tristram. That's in town. Not fighting monsters. No effects on screen. FPS dropped to 31 once they were out fighting, and even then they were only in the beginning of act 1. There gets to be much more on screen later (more monsters, more effects, etc.) and it WILL slow down even more than that.

Haha. That's really the only reason I can think of. I would actually really like to hear if Mac computers have a single feature aside from cosmetics that makes them even close to worth their price, but no one can name one. And as for the cosmetics, I think they lose there, too. My Dell Studio XPS 17 laptop looks way cooler and sleeker than a Macbook.

Although I don't wanna be a hater on Mac-users, I tend to agree with you. I think that Macs, generally speaking, cater to suckers. But then again, it's really none of my business what other people wanna spend their money on. Macs do have style/build-quality and ease-of-use advantages over PCs, right?

Style is a big maybe depending on your preference, but build quality is a big no. Macs have better build quality then some of the big guys like Dell, HP, and Gateway, but smaller companies like Toshiba and ASUS are like tanks compared to Macs.

I disagree, and I say that as an owner of a few Asus laptops. I think Apple also enjoys a better customer service edge (which is largely irrelevant to me) and better warranty conditions. Still, I would probably never buy an Apple for any reason.

That study isn't so reliable as it only deals with laptop buyers who purchased extra warranty via SquareTrade. You should read past the headline. Moreover, I've had nearly fatal errors with several Asus models, and after doing online research I realized that it was a series of problems that affected many buyers. It's not difficult to see that many Apple laptops have superior build quality, which factors into the premium you pay for these laptops over their competition. There have been a handful of models from others laptop manufacturers (mainstream) that have followed suit, for example the Dell XPS 15z (and other slim models with aluminum chassis) and the HP Envy line, but build-quality is one of Apple's primary advantages over the competition.

If you want to play Diablo 3 on a Macbook properly, you're going to want to upgrade to the 15" model. They all come with an nVidia GT 650m graphics, it should be more than enough to handle most games including D3. 13" only comes with Intel Integrated Graphics which are absolutely horrible for gaming.

I don't get why some people here just can't understand the fact that some people prefer Macs over PCs, I enjoy using OS X and I found it to be better than Windows but that doesn't mean I think Windows is horrible and that everyone using a Windows computer is wasting their time. Every OS has its ups and downs and for what I'm going to use a laptop for, I think I should get a MacBook. Yes, it's overpriced but I can afford it so it doesn't really bother me.

Based on this you can judge the consumer IQ...what is the average IQ of an Apple user or an xbox user etc...

When you have no valid argument to back up ur purchase...but you still buy an Apple product...that is a measurement of ur intelligence.

So OP...i really have nothing against you...you may be the nicest person in the world but factually speaking...you are an IDIOT.

I'm starting to think that he's trolling.... No one comes here to ask about Macbook Pro's for gaming after giving an answer, he still goes with a Macbook Pro.

No, I'm not brainwashed and no, I'm not an idiot. The fact that someone can measure anyone's intelligence simply from the fact that he/she is buy a Mac is laughably stupid. Who says I don't have any valid argument to back up my purchase? I just haven't presented any because I'm not here to justify my purchase, all I wanted was to ask if that machine could run Diablo 3 or not. If we follow the logic that anyone who buys a Macs is then that makes half my university professors and many famous physicists idiots.

No, they're all just hipsters. Someone who knows why the Earth spins around the sun does not necessarily have to be tech smart. If the requests for justification are bothering you, just leave the thread.

Agreed. He's not even sure why he wants, but the marketing got to him. Still, let's not pretend that Macbooks don't have certain advantages over PCs. When it comes to gaming or even for most advanced users, however, there's no contest.

[QUOTE="Immortal--"]No, I'm not brainwashed and no, I'm not an idiot.

You're not an idiot and your IQ isn't low. It's just that for most people in most circumstances, the Macs don't offer increased value commensurate with the premium you pay in price. Most people, myself included, feel that Macs are a rip-off for most people that own them. We think that this occurs very often as a result of marketing-brainwashing, and buying into hype and image and style. Macs do have some advantages over PCs, but we think that those advantages aren't applicable to most Mac owners. You're paying a premium for an inferior machine (in most cases) when you don't have to. That's it in a nutshell.

Yes, it's overpriced but I can afford it so it doesn't really bother me.Immortal--
this is the wrong forum to ask about apple computers. most people in this forums are windows pc fanboys. they'll just bash apple and ur decision of buying one instead of answering ur question. it would be better to post this on another website forum dedicated to apple products like macrumors.com if u want straight up answers. but to answer ur question, based on the hardware spec, it can run diablo 3 but at minimum tho.

If you consider sub-30 framerates to be "running", then yeah. Furthermore, people here aren't "windows fanboys". It's called being informed and thinking logically. There has never been a logical reason to justify to absolutely ludicrous premium price of Mac computers, and people who say there is never actually present their alleged reasons. Macs are overpriced and inferior in every measurable way. These are facts, not opinions.

I just want to know why the Pro lines offers the damn Intel integrated card. I understand that's the cheap model but usually the word "pro" means a little more than bare minimum. I see people make this mistake all the time. When I got mine back in '08 I knew exactly what it can and can't do. If you want the cheap end on an Apple laptop go with an Air and call it a day.

Also, someone said something about smart people like their professors owning macbooks, so it must not be just for stupid people. Your professors probably didn't pay full price. Apple has a bunch of programs for teachers and educational workers that get them large discounts, and sometimes sraight up free stuff. If they did pay full price... well they're probably not computer science professors. Haha. They are probably very intelligent in their respective fields, but uninformed when it comes to personal computer technology, so they're just as easily duped by slick marketing as the average casual consumer. That's what Apple does. Their entire marketing strategy is to convince people who won't do their own research that there's something inherently special about a mac. "It's not a PC, its a mac." When, in fact, a Mac is still a PC, just with a different (inferior) operating system (and all sorts of proprietary and exclusive hardware that doesn't offer any advantages and can't be upgraded at any reasonable price).

It's just like how they made the iPod a big deal by convincing ignorant consumers that it wasn't just an MP3 player. To illustrate: a couple years ago, I was looking around an electronics store for one of those FM radio adapters, for listening to an MP3 player in a car without a tape deck. I found two different models from ******. Both plugged in with a standard 8th inch audio cable (neither was a special ipod one that used the dock plug, or anything). They were completely identical, except that one was black, and the other was white, and said "made for iPod" on the case. The "made for iPod" one was $10 more. And I saw the clerk sell someone the "made for iPod" one. Some lady came in and said she needed an FM radio adapter. The guy asked if she had an iPod, or "just an mp3 player" (his exact words). She said iPod, and he gave her the ipod one, without even mentioning the other. That's Apple's target market.

Lol that's a funny one. If you were to listen to yourself, you're telling him to go to places where they think Windows is the anti christ and have all been brainwashed by Apple marketing.

This is correct,

If you consider sub-30 framerates to be "running", then yeah. Furthermore, people here aren't "windows fanboys". It's called being informed and thinking logically.
