33 For me. Of course I have a ton from D2D as well; most of my game purchases are digital now-a-days.

Orange Box. I don't buy games from steam if I can help it, and I avoid digital purchases in general. Love the new game box.

I don't buy from Steam unless it's a Valve game or a weekend deal. I've had bad experiences in the past with third party games from them.

I've got maybe 8 or 9 that I actually bought off of Steam. I love the service, its a great community tool (and if a DRM-laden game comes out, buying it through Steam lifts the install limit) and the weekend deals are great. However, I still generally find myself buying physical copies of games off Amazon, just to have the disc and such. But when I want a game directly on launch, I usually use Steam :).

Around 90 or so, I'm so happy to be done with CDs and DVDs. I usually don't even care if Steam is more expensive because it takes care of patching, etc. for me.

27 games, counting Peggle Extreme (which is free) and the Heroes of Might and Magic V expansions (which are standalone expansions as far as I know).

Most, if not all, of those purchases were weekend deals, and a lot of them were parts of compilations. I have spent less than $100 on Steam purchases. I'd say probaby the one that was most worth it was $4.99 for Beyond Good and Evil, even though I only played through it once. Tomb Raider Anniversary wasn't too shabby at $5 either. (Yes, one of those was $4.99 and the other was $5. :P )

I'm still waiting for Braid to go on sale for half off or so. Dude's holding out on me...

Okay, realistically... 6 games (not including HL2 Lost Coast) Red Orchestra, HL2 Deathmatch, CS:S, DOD:S, L4D, TF2. 4 mods - Insurgency, Darkest Hour, Mare Nostrum (it's just there :P) and Synergy, and two pre-loaded - HL2 and Killing Floor.

The rest of mine are non Steam games :P. COH, Medal of Honor Allied Assault, Freedom Fighters (which runs too fast and crashes on this computer :(), Civilization, Warcraft... etc.

A lot. Don't know how many and it's not like the specific number really matters. I buy almost all my games off Steam now. I don't like having to worry about storing boxes, disks, manuals, etc. I also don't like having to worry that a disk will go bad, get scratched, etc. With digital downloading I just install the games I am playing and have the games I'm not playing on standby if I want to install them. People who still prefer to have boxes and disks are living in the past and afraid of change.

You must be joking. PC games are much cheaper than console games. And Steam has some incredible deals every weekend.

Skeptomania

It's not quite that simple, not even close.

Sure some people are materialistic and like to have "stuff" whenever possible (including myself). But some people also like their "stuff" to be under their ownership/control/possession/etc rather than it being provided to them as a service with the particular dependencies/contingencies that it brings.

To each their own, although I prefer buying retail when possible, Steam is cool. I probably have between 30-40 games with Steam. I don't have many games with gog.com, but I really like their service as well.

Yeah no.

Hmm what should I do, buy a game from Steam for 50 € and I get no physical proof of my purchase, and my game is forever tied to ONE ACCOUNT that can be closed/banned/hacked etc. ...

Or buy an actual physical copy for 20£ from Amazon.co.uk?

Which seems to be a better deal for you?

Steam is horrible for us Europeans and for people who actually like to have a physical copy of something they purchase.

Not all games are $50 on Steam, so that is a garbage argument that relies on fiction. Games on Steam have a wide range of prices and are often on sale.

A paper box and plastic disk are just as likely to get lost, stolen, broken, burned in a fire, etc than you are to somehow lose your account, I've had my Steam account for years and never had a problem. I've lost multiple physical copies of games for various reasons. You fear losing your account because you are afraid of a different way of buying the rights to play a game. Fear of the new and unknown.

Skeptomania

No

It's more because people prefer having a tangible product which they can call their own. A presentable case, with artwork, sometimes a manual, an actual hard copy of the game...

The same principle applies to those who prefer to buy CD's and DVD's instead of downloading music and films.

And I've only lost or damaged about 2 or 3 games over the last 16 years. Losing game discs is only a problem if you make it a problem.

I've got nothing against Steam, it doesn't "frighten" me at all. I've bought plenty of games through it.... but I'd still rather have a hard copy over a digital download any day.

Skeptomania

Right. I was talking about new games, and EUROS not DOLLARS. New BIG games on Steam are almost always 50 €, when they are 20-25£ on Amazon.co.uk and Play.com. And you can find some pretty crazy deals on Amazon for a bit older games, I've seen some games go for under 2£.

The thing is when you buy DD, you're essentially paying for nothing. You might as well just *cough* you know *cough* the game and you'd probably even have a superior experience since you don't have to use Steam to start the game and there'd be no DRM.

And in theory, IN THEORY - Valve could close down Steam any day and they wouldn't have to give you access to your games. Tying all your games to one account, on one service, owned by one company is not my idea of secure.

Valve is a large, stable company. Your house is more likely to burn down, destroying all your boxes and disks, than Valve is to close down and completly cut off Steam. Fearig Valve and Steam will go away is what I'm talking about.

Also, Steam is not the only DD service.

New games are going to be full price on Amazon as well and go down in price on Steam over time just like they do everywhere else. Plus, you can preorder for a discount if you know for sure you want a game before it releases.

Boxed games these days are little more than paper and plastic representations of exactly what you get with a DD game. You often still need to create some sort of account to play that hard copy of a game.
