and is there any real practical advantage over regular hard drives as far as gamers are concerned. I know there is supposed to be quicker access, but its not like sata drives have painstakingly slow access. I also am not concerned about power usage, i just dont know if the price is worth upgrading to solid state.

Right now they are luxury items, pretty much over-priced for the general population. For games, loading is instant but cpu, ram,and gpu will always have far more importance.

^ pretty much this, I never found vanilla hard discs all that slow myself and though they may not be able to compete speed wise with SSD's they blow SSD's away in terms of storage capacity and price. The cheapest SSD I can find is a 64gb one and it costs £75, I can get a 1000gb legacy Hard disc for £50.

Perhaps the way forward is a "hybrid" of the two ? Seagate have such a product out at the moment. They have combined a 500gb mag disc with 4gb of flash memory to improve disc speeds. You can read more about it here :-

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/laptop-hdd

But it will be many years before SSD's become viable enough for the kind of storage tasks normal hard discs are used for.

Vanilla Ice Cream Hard Disk...?FelipeInside

The term "vanilla" is often used to describe something that is plain, ordinary, or standard Hence when I said "vanilla hard disc" I naturally meant the current magnetic hard discs that we have used for decades.

price to preformanceto storage doesn't add up. As it sits you can get around 6 tb of storage for around 120 gb ssd. Right now a 1tb ssd is around 3k. Compared to 50-100 dollars
