How many of you are planning to upgrade to Vista to play Bioshock in DX10!?
I am seriously considering switching to Vista..
This topic is locked from further discussion.
I have Vista 64x Home Premium booted up - customized - and optimized all for Bioshock and games after it. I already pre-loaded Bioshock from STEAM, and it's already INSTALLED on my computer!
All I have to do is wait for August 21 @ 12 AM and I press "PLAY". Then, maybe I'll be the first to play Bioshock with DX10 graphics maxed out with an average FPS of about 70-100.
what are you going to do if it doesnt work? I don't do OS upgrades. When I get my next PC is when I get Vista. For now there is no compelling reason to change and there is actually some case to be made for waiting on improvements to DirectX 10, etc. Why beta test for MS and be frustrated and why spend 150 bucks for something that will more likely run me around 50 or less as part of a system purchase. I am guessing a major oem like HP probably pays MS around 50 bucks and passes that cost onto the consumer as part of the total system price.
My last two game rigs have been HP retail boxes with memory, soundblaster and nvidia (BFG) upgrades to make them competent if not screaming gaming systems. Someday I'll have whatever is the future equivalent of todays Falcon Northwest with liquid cooled quad SLI, etc. but for now, those do very nicely for me and when I setup a new one, there's nothing they can't run well for a couple years generally before they might need a new video card, etc.
Tax time next year is when I might get serious about the next PC and therefore get Vista with it.
I've looked at various side by side DX9 and DX10 demos and while DX10 is nice, really when I am in the middle of a firefight in some game that already looks excellent, it does not matter and it does not detract from the fun. So the heck with blowing money for a OS upgrade I do not need for anything is my view.
The improvements are evolutionary, not revolutionary as the purveyor of Vista would like gamers to believe and then open up thier wallets over.
I'ts funny how all you guys always talk about the need to upgrade honestly if you know what your doing then you probally already have Vista installed i personally have Vista x64 ultimate installed and there is no game that i can't get to work and work great i think if you guys are pondering the idea of getting it installed and getting the games to work it maybe that you all lack the knowlage of installing an operating system its not that hard but if you had problems doing this with Xp then expect to have problems with Vista I mean honestly its all about having the best hardware and being able to play the games with all the bells and whistles i personally can play Lost planet on the highest setting and i think thats probally one of the most graphic intensive games out at the moment and i play the dx10 version of course here is the list of my specs though.
Vista 64 Ultimate
2 Core Duo 2.66 stock / 3.24 Overclocked
2x-EVGA 8800GTX SLI
4 GIG OCZ Ram
2x-150GIG Raptor Drives
850 Watt power Suppply
24" Gateway LCD 1080p

It's going to work. I've played over 3 dozen games on Vista without a problem including Lost Planet with DX10 maxed out getting over 100 fps.
And I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get about 70-100 fps because I can get any DX9 game over 150. 3DMARK06 gave me about 90-100 FPS maxed
EDIT:
Idk why people bug out about Vista too because i've yet to encounter a single error or problem in Vista. "Yet" but still - nothing so far and it's been 2 months.
Dont know yet. I am considering new 20" LCD widescreen, since now i have 19" non-widescreen, or Vista. I know LCD costs more than Vista, but i cant have them both. So what would you recommend. Jump to Vista, or jump to better LCD??domke13
I would recommend jump to Vista. Widescreens will only come down in price (and up in usefulness) in the coming months.
If you're at all intrigued by Vista, then give it a go, but if what you've heard doesn't interest you, stick with new widescreen LCD

Yes. But the problem is that i wont be able to afford new LCD till next summer, since i am only 14 and i can make some money only at summer time jobs. On the other hand i could get Vista, since it costs 2 times less than new LCD i am planning tom get. Hmm really hard decision.

Vista, if you're PC can handle it good, can bring great visuals and effects. I love the way it looks on my 22", it's like staring at a crystal when browsing folders and stuff. It look nice but again you got to have a good PC to handle it. 2+GB recommended and at least 2.20 GHz+

Well i have C2D E6600, 8800 GTX and 2GB of RAM. And crappy 19" LCD. So either Vista now, and no LCD untill summer 2008, or LCD now, and Vista when Crysis comes.
My PC could handle vista easily. But frankly I'm lazy, I don't care about anything Vista offers (other than DX10, which isn't even that compelling as DX9 games look fine), and I have better things to spend a few hundred dollars on. cmdrmonkey
Ye. You have point. I mean the graphical improvement in Bioshock probably wont be even noticeable when playing the game, but bigger and widescreen LCD will surely be.

Well don't. Vista is a complete rip off.
DirectX10 will be noticably better than DirectX9, you should believe that. Even motion blur alone makes it look better.-Unreal-
So you are saying that there will be no motion blur in DX9 version of Bioshock, but it will be in DX10, or it will be just better in DX10??

The game regardless will look spectacular.. What I am more interested in is the possibility of increased performance over DX9.
I purchased Vista not only for BioShock, but for the other DX10 games such as UT3 and Crysis, not to mention the fact that I was building a new rig, so it was the logical time to make the jump.firefly026
Yep same for me. Too bad I wont have a dx10 card till next month....:*(

I already had vista, so it wasn't a matter of choice in regards to Bioshock. I've had Home Premium for some time now. However, I only have a 7950 GT so I won't get any DX 10 goodies.
lolol vista has been sitting on my harddrive for a few months, not installed.
People may call me lazy but Im just that opposed to vista, but I still want dx10 graphics :(
Well, if you're that opposed (I don't see how you can be, seeing as how you haven't even used it yet), then you can always dual boot.lolol vista has been sitting on my harddrive for a few months, not installed.

I have used it though, I go to lans ...
If I dual boot then I have to waste hdd space installing things twice -_- I only have 1tb hdd space :P
Hmm. So i am up to decision. Right now my 2 options are:
1: Go for new 20" LCD widescreen LCD to upgrade from 19" LCD
2: Get Vista home premium, Creative X-Fi extreme gamer fatal1ty sound card, new hard drive for Vista, and i also save around 200 euros compared to first decision.
Sorry for going off topic, but which one should i choose??
I didnt for Halo 2 (that is, if I even wanted it to begin with) and I certainly wont for Bioshock.
Im looking foward to Bioshock, but only for the gameplay. To be honest, the idea of having a seperate team dedicated to water effects frightens me. Reeks of an excessive focus on aesthetics.

Well from what I saw in the demo, one of the best parts of the game was the atmosphere, and a lot of that atmosphere was down to it's really nice graphics. This is one of those games that graphics make the game just more immersive.

Ya, I suppose youre right...kinda like how STALKER is spookier with HDR and detailed shadowsthan without it.

I switched a good while back, so I guess that means yes.

I got a Dell refurbished 20 inch widescreen monitor for about 200 off their website... plus it comes with a really nice warranty. Dunno how much you planned to pay...
Also, how does one tell if it is a 64 bit version of Vista or not?

pssst the game doesn't come out till 4pm EST on the 21st. And you won't be getting 70-100 fps with that or any current rig in dx10 with max detail.
edit: oh and yeah, I'll be playing this on vista 64 bit for sure... preloaded and waiting till 4pm teusday ;)

For new LCD i am not going lower than NEC WGX2 20" LCD, whit S-IPS panel which can be found for around 560 euros in my country. It is also widescreen. But do you think it is worth to get new LCD only cause ill get widescreen whit it and higher resolution??
I can relate to your struggle very well my friend.
I had 19" LCD 1 month ago and after sitting down on my friends 20.1" wide-screen for 1 hour my decision was final.
To those who said you don't have a graphical improvement with wide-screen, they never experienced it.
all new games and many one that are current support 1680x1050 resolution on 16:10 widescreen format.
The difference is spectacular my friend, but trying for example to play an DVD is gorgeous, even surfing the web is more vivid and colorful then on my previous monitor.
Look for 2 ms response time, 3000:1 rate and at least 250 cm2 or higher.
Right now? You won't gain anything from Vista, there are no true direct x 10 games, upgrade smart. XP does all the job done.
You will not regret the monitor, from personal experience I never did.
