How many games can I put on my gaming computer before it signifigantly slows down? There are so many good ones coming soon, and so many I missed out on before I got my computer. So... How long till I have too many?

Heres my Specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz

3068MB RAM

813GB Harddrive space available

ATI Radeon HD 3800 graphics card

Thanks for your help.

Quite a few. I have over 1.5TB of space on my rig and have 40+ games installed on it right now (Inlcuding Steam with some 20 or so games, both Crysis games, Age of Conan and other huge installs). I see no performance hit.

Just keep a fair amount of free space on your HD. The number of games installed doesn't matter, just your free space.

Try to keep 10-15% free on your HDD, as well as doing a defragment every few weeks. There's nothing wrong with installing lots of games, but loading times will increase if you have a very small amount of space left, but it generally won't affect game performance. Its not the HDD that renders the graphics or calculates physics.

I'm pretty sure you've asked this kind of question before, and it's a silly question. Keep about 20GB free. Besides that, go nuts. Unless you're a porn baron or a pirate lord, you probably won't be filling 813GB any time soon when most modern games are about 8GB a pop.

Don't even think about it. I have over 100 games installed and out of my 580GB, I have over 100GB left. And I am a porn baron.

As well hard drives are so cheap now if you do fill it just buy a new HDD, I just wnated a cheap one to get my custom pc rolling so when with a 250 gig seagate, filled it in like 2 months, then purchased a 500 gig seagate, as soon as I fill that I guess I will need to purchase a 1tb just to be safe since it will be my last Hdd before i run out of sata ports.

Ermm where did you pluck this 10-15% figure from? Work out how much vitual memory you use and keep space accordingly. The defrag advice is sound.

Hehe... dont worry about it pal. You would have to play a serious amount of games to fill that up. Just keep installin and playin to your heart's desire.

As stated above by fatshodan (LOL), dont worry unless youre a pirate lord or porn barron. that is sig material for sure.

Make sure to keep drivers and .dlls uncluttered. Defrag from time to time and if something appears to start slowing down reinstall it after saving your game saves etc ... in that way you could arguably not ever have to worry about running out of room.

tcarruth

I think that's from the the 15% min free space requirement for the Windows defragger to run. I'd guess that when the drive is more than 85-90% full, the master file table will also be fragmented, leading to more trouble during defragging. The windows defragger is nothing more than a pretty graphical display of lines in this situation lol, it simply cannot defrag the MFT or work properly with low space. The payware defraggers don't have this limitation though. Diskeeper 2008 routinely defrags my 500GB photoediting drive (contains only dslr RAW/TIFFs) even when free space temporarily drops to about 7%. Automatically, no less!
