ive been planning on upgrading my computer to mae it much better at gaming. im planning on upgrading my graphis crd to 8800 gts, from my 7300le 512. however, if i was to upgrade my memory and cpu aswell,  how much would this help my gaming?  currently have a pentium d820, and a gig of memory, if i was to upgrade these to a core 2 duo and add another gig of memory, how much would this help gaming?

They help quite a bit, and for general purpose use. A gig of ram is good, but 2 gigs will definately help, for the cpu your cpu will bottlneck that graphics card. Which will cause lower fps, and random slowdowns.

Basically, yes. A general rule of thumb is your computer will only run as fast as your best piece of hardware.

Its like a sand clock, your component is going slower than another, and thus making it go alot slower. It cannot feed it enoguh information to generate.

Surely your computer only runs as fast as your worst piece of hardware, not best?

It'll make a big difference, although not nearly as much as going from the 7300 to an 8800. Make sure your psu can power it too, if your pc came with a 7300 chances are it has a really low wattage psu.

I think you mean your worst piece of hardware???? yeah no point getting loads of high speed ram and a monster graphics card when your processor cant keep up

Yes. I think Matthew means worst piece of hardware. The trick is to have components that are in the same performance category, so it's a balanced system.

I get alot of stutter problems, could my 1gb of ram and 3200+ be holding back my 7900GT?

I could add another gb, but I dont think my motherboard could handle it. Can a motherboard have that effect?

The motherboard should be able to handle another GB, as long as there is a spare socket for the RAM. As to bottlenecking, I would say that the processor may be limiting the performance of the 7900GT.

hmm, looking at this, do you think it is worth upgrading my motherboard aswell then? i bought my pc as a whole i neve built it, so im unsure as to what name it has :P, however i know its a lga 775 800mhz. therefore if i bought a cpu runnig at 1066MHz, would that be limited as well?

I think the 8800Mhz you are referring to means the max FSB of the CPU.

yeah, i do mean the max fsb, which is 800MHz, so would this hold back a cpu unning at 1066MHz ( may seem obvious, but im new to 'computing'...)

By stutter problems, do you mean low framerates in games ? Perhaps try turning down graphics settings. Or run 3DMark 06 and compare the score with other 7900GT cards.

no, I mean the games freezing everytime I enter a new area to load textures, I know I can lower texture resolution but I dont think its worth the trade off. F.E.A.R, Oblivion, BF2142 are some examples of the games I get it in

In that case, this may not be a bottlenecking issue. Try updating to the latest drivers.

I did run 3dmark 05, and on the list of people with similar set ups, out of 42 I was 39th :(

I've formateed, tried many different tweaks and drivers, and nothing really solves it, not even overclocking. (I dont keep my card overclocked though, I just tried it out once)

my motherboard only has 2 slots for RAM, so can someone reccomend decent but cheap 2x 1gb sticks? I'd really appreciate it, I'm pretty sure its all down to my ram being to lame.

I also have a 580Watt Hiper modular psu, which did solve alot of problems when I bought it, but I still get stutter.

Did you mean to say it will only run as fast as your slowest piece of hardware? The way you said it implies there will never be a bottleneck.

It could mean there isnt enough ram to properly buffer everything?? or yes maybe driver issues

That's a possibility. Increase RAM or lower texture buffer size would probably solve the problem.
