4 - 6 GB of RAM is fine I honestly do not see the need of 8 - 12 GB of RAM besides photoshop, cinebench , maya...etc

ill let you in on a secret, unless your getting an i7/x58 board... DONOT buy triple channel DDR3 your just wasting your money

Since very few games have a 64-bit version, they won't use more than 2 GB so 4 GB in total is still fine for now and the near future.

So small you can hardly tell

Dual channel: 4GB

Triple channel: 6GB

Anything more isn't necessary but is nice to have and perfectly acceptable. It may speed things up in a crunch if you get close to your limit otherwise.

I wouldn't settle for anything slower than 1600mhz cas6 (cas7 if it's cheap). Anything slower isn't much of an upgrade from DDR2 1066 cas5. DDR3 is pretty cheap now anyways.
