I'm probably upgrading soon, gonna get the 4890 I think. But if these GPUs aren't gonna beoutdated, at least for the rest of this year, I'm not gonna get it. Will it last for a few years? For instance, my x1950xt lasted for years, but my 9600GT got outdated FAST.

The 4890 and GTX 275 are at or near the top of the product lines that each company currently offers. Your x1950xt lasted for a long time because it too was at or near the very best when it was released. The 9600gt was never anything more than a very strong midrange card, so it appeared to have gotten outdated faster. (Although a 9600gt can still mow through most games at high settings at 1680x1050 or below).

Lesson is- If you buy a great high-end product, it will last longer before becoming outdated than a mid-range product. I'm still happy with my card after over a year, and it was roughly in the same slot in the product lineup as the gtx 275 is now.

The Geforce 8800's and 9600-9800's arent really outdated they still run most games maxed, And even the newer games all on high to max settings. These newer cards arent nothing to special then a performance boost for high resolutions 1650x1050 or higher. Now it looks like that ATI and Nvidia will release their Dx 11 cards later this year, so getting any of the newer cards wuld be almost pointless if you already have a good card. Wait and see.

I say get a new card because it would be a big, big jump from a 9600gt, and I don't see any games that a 4890 couldn't manhandle, then maybe wait for the second round of 5800 or gtx300 series when the bugs are worked out in those. Crysis is the only game a challenge to the 4890, and the 4890 can run crysis all very high 2AA 1680X1050 smoothly. I don't see a game coming out soon that will work the 4890 like crysis does.

It will last until HD6xxx / GTX 4xx series. Video card upgrades have always been 2 generations later (based on power demands of next-generation games).

I'm using a 9600GT as well, and though it is no high-end card, it is terrific for budget-conscious PC gamers and can run most, if not all PC games at high resolutions with very high settings. I would wait for the DX11 cards coming out later this year. Even if you don't get the DX11 cards, the DX10 cards will get a pretty significant price drop due to their depreciated value in the market, and then you can easily snatch an ATI HD4890 or Nvidia GTX275 or what not.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I have the 8800GTS-512 card and it still maxes any game I throw at it, it's mind boggling when I see people still getting these 4890 and GTX 275 cards. There really is no game in the near future that I see that would warrant such a card purchase unless it was for Crysis 2...and that's a long way off.

well you said it yourself that your 9600gt is outdated, so to me this means to you its not performing like you want. So a 4890 would be a big increase and they might not come down in price a whole lot because it depends what people buy because the demand will drive the price, the 4870 price didn't come down since the 4890. And the DX11 cards may be very expensive. So you may be waiting around for nothing. And a 4890 will be good for at least 2 years. The 4890 or GTX275 is a really good deal.

Probably within 6 months the next generation of cards will be around. That being said, if you have the best atm you should be good for awhile, depending on your res and other things.

the 4890 uses 10.1 dx so that should provide it some of the dx 11 advantages. that being said, even tho dx11 is coming soon these cards will still be great for a long while as we will have to wait for dx11 games. and that could be a while as we will be waiting for "good" dx11 games lol, its seems like about 4 good games come out each year and diablo 3 and starcraft 2 has that number cut in half already and i doubt they will even use dx 11

All 10.1 is 10 with a standard of 4x AA on with a few different coding whicj means no dx11. By mid 2010 you can start seeing dx 11 games hopefully

lol i didn't say it did dx11 read what i wrote, you will get some benifit from having 10.1 when 11 gets released. you will notice a boost in performance, as thats the whole point of 10.1, improved code.

Maybe it's just the games I've been working with lately giving me problems. GTA4 is crap with my 9600GT, and for some reason Bioshock on all high at 1680x1050 is giving me fps grief (I have no idea why, I have my 9600gt, q6600, 2 gb ram) and it's pissing me off. Even when I tone it down A LOT, it still gives me crap framerates, idk maybe it's not my GPU. I guess i can wait and see the prices on the dx11 cards though, if they're acceptable i'll get one, but most likely they won't be, lol. Maybe there will be a price drop though on the 4890.

A GTX 275 or 4890 will last a long time if you play at lower resolutions and low AA. I don't see any games coming out in a couple years that will cripple those cards.

GTA 4 is a VRAM hog - even 512MB cards choke on it. Cards with more VRAM will handle the game much better, but the underlying problem there is the game itself not necessarily your card (unless you really love GTA 4). As for Bioshock, that game should run smooth as butter - what was the last time you updated your video drivers?

Hi Maybe you might want to try a benchmark program. Futuremark's 3D'06.

At the end of the benchmark, you go to their site where your score is shown.

The program compares your score with others who have a similar system

to yours. If you get a very low score in comparison, maybe you have corrupted

drivers and need a reinstall. Its a free demo program you can download.

This and also it eats up dual cores and prefers Tri &Quad cores.

Yea, I have a q6600. BUt yes, I need a 1gb card probably. As for Bioshock, I still have no idea. I'll try 3d mark.
