Thought you couldnt use photoshop as its a straight image editor, and not for animation like .GIFS, I use Flash CS3 if that helps.

Photoshop CS3 is capable of making animated gifs. It's not all that great with doing it but it is possible. Click on the "Window" menu and select animation. An animation window will show up with a timeline where you edit what layers will do and when. A little hard to understand at first. When you're ready to save it, click on the File menu and select "Save for Web & Devices". It will default to save as GIF for you as you will see in the window that shows up. From that point you're on your own. There's too many options that I don't know how to explain or really use.

Adobe Fireworks CS3?

If you already know how to use Imageready, you should feel right at home with Fireworks.
