Gonna make this short and sweet, because I don't have much time to write this. I personally use Ubuntu, its great. Pretty, easy to use, and very stable. I would check it out. But, before you go and use that one, try all the ones that interest you out. the great thing about linux, is that they made something amazingly useful, called a live CD, essentially, they made a bootable version of their operating system, and it doesn't affect your computer at all. Just download it, stick it on a cd, and fire it up.
The actual installation is quite easy and there are two ways to go about doing it, choose the one that you like better. The first way is to make a partition on your original HDD, a partition is essentially splitting you HDD into two or more seperate parts. The other way, is to get a new HDD and use that, I personally chose the latter. After you have chosen one, and completed the procedure, pop in the live CD, and choose the isntall function (should be right on the desktop). IT will guide you through the installation process. It is pretty much idiot proof. When you are done, you will have a dual boot system. This doesn't change much, except you choose which OS you want to use on startup. And one quick tip about DualBooting, most likely, you will be using GRUB, and if you ever get "GRUB error 21" it means it cannot find both HDD's, the simplest way to fix this problem, is to make sure the HDD cords are put in firmly. sorry this is jumbled, I am a little tired, if you wnat more info, go to ubuntuforums.org

Frankie, dude, Linux is an OS. Visit www.ubuntu.com, download the software for the live CD, burn the live CD, boot from the CD, and follow the instructions. You will need to partition your drive to install the second OS, but you will be able to boot into either Windows or Linux afterwards.
Best of luck.

no im saying i dont want another os i jsut want linux. can i just use that or do i ahve 2 use partition or anything?frankie_dude
You just want linux? I guess you don't play any games. Have fun and remember Linux is not for the inpatient or for anyone who wants everything plug and play. The simple task of installing a driver could take you hours or even days before you get it right.
can anyone give me the direct link to it because i checked and the one i was going to download but it said that it was not the live cd. so can someone plesae give me the link? thanks
