I recently brought a gtx 460 and upgraded my ram to 4gb ddr2 800mhz....with the intention of overclocking my now ancient e6750 which at stock 2.66ghz obviously will limit how well i can play certain games. Even at stock my cpu gets up to 66 degrees on near max load, and this is with an aftermarket cpu cooler running at 100%, although i dont know the make but i know its pretty big and got a copper heat sink so theres no way it should this hot with it. Even if i take the side panel off the case it makes little difference, and theres no way i can overclock if at stock it is already this hot.

Why do you think my cpu is so hot? Could it be a problem with the thermal paste, maybe replacing it would help? Or maybe the aftermarket cooler isnt a good one? Although even with a stock cooler it shouldnt be getting so high...the max temperature the e6750 can operate at is 72 degrees btw! Inside the case is relatively clean, abit dusty but not too bad and the wires are quite tidy. Any suggestions would be much appreicated!

What's maxing it? Are you getting high cpu usage at idle?

I think your cpu cooler is not cutting it is it a Intel Stock Cooler? If so then change that to a Corsair h50 and that should drop the temps in Half.

Id try replacing the thermal paste before buying a new cooler, if this doesnt lower your temps then perhaps look for a new cooler.

Yea i think ill try the thermal paste first...any recommendations for cheap but effective products? And if i overclock it to say 3.4ghz or perhaps more, which is very attainable i think, is there many games that would still be cpu limited at 1680x1050?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/accessories/B002G1YPH0 seems to be a really good price/performance HSF.

Get this, it dropped my load temp from 60 degrees to 40. It's also way quieter than stock heatsinks. It's big though, so make sure your case will fit it. Also, a good cooler is useless if the case itself has poor airflow. What case do you have and how many intake and exhaust fans does it have?
