Warning; you're about to get slaughtered by legions of Valve Zealots! Have a nice day! If you have any problems take it up to the actual Steam forums, they're surprisingly nice, honest, and helpful there. Here you'll get untold amount of people who claims they never had any problesm and they were there day 1, just like: Vista, 360 RROD, PS1 and 2, etc. No one believes them but there's so many that if you call them out... eh, well, it doesn't end well.Nerkcon

thats rather negative....

truth is, never had problems with Steam in the 2 years i've had it, and the 25 or so games I've bought on it. Just finished playing Titan Quest (installed early today on Steam) and have been playing for hours on Morrowind GotY Edition this week (bought on Steam a month ago), works smooth as silk.

Doesn't matter who believes me, its a fact.

I doubt Steam is the problem in most of these cases.

the only problem i've had is the people that don't know how to use it or aren't smart enough to read the home page on steam program the store one

wow, how was I supposed to know this game was tied to steam? I hate this community

You were supposed to read the part on the back of the box where it says "Requires Steam to run". Steam was down for scheduled maitenance (something that occurs less than once a year). I've been using Steam for over a year, and had very few issues (usually only when servers get overloaded). Your complaints are based on pure ignorance. lrn2read.

Problem is we all should have said this after he showed us how ignorant he is. Maybe if we all tell him the same thing he would see his incompetence and learn to read the box next time for requirements. Valve games "always" have requirements, most of the time on the box, if not inside on the piece of paper that holds your key. And they have the Steam logo on the cover for a reason.

You want your money back because you bought a product which clearly states you need the Steam client to use it. If you'd done research you'd have known that and understood that the Steam client is a free, online oriented service, and like all things online require maintenence every now and then. Yes, it sucks not being able to play a game for a epriod of 3 hours, but consider what you have in The Orange Box. You have five top notch games for a very low price and you're complaining becaue you want it now now now! All the "retail" version means is you don't have a DIGITAL DOWNLOAD, you get all the files on a handy disc.

And if TC is the "avid" gamer he claims to be he'd know exactly what Steam is and how it works. His only legit complaint is that he wasn't able to play the games straight away due to the maintenance thing, but that's just bad luck. Steam told everyone it was happening, and if he's that impatient for 3 hours I don't care. He needs to grow up.

Give Steam a shot. It's a fantastic service. Steam has every week fantastic deals for games (Far Cry and Far Cry 2 50% and Titan Quest 75% off right now), you don't need a disc to play - in fact you don't need discs at all. And that's just the start, there are tons of smaller features such as the possibility to backup your save games online so you can easily move them from computer to computer. Really, you should try it. I barely buy retail games anymore because there are always better deals on Steam.

To be honest I hate Steam too. You are supposed to pay by credit card or paypal and both aren't spread widely here in Europe (at least Germany). The prices for most newer games suck (honestly 50Euro for ME2? I can get it for much less if I buy it in store). And it's a way of total control. And yes I have a lot of experience with steam. Used it a lot when it was launched but my HL 1 CD-Key wasn't accepted and the support didn't offer any solution. This whole registering of your games sucks.

For those saying that the "Requires Steam to Play" warning isn't on their box for the game, I know for my copy the system requirements and that warning were posted on the sticker that sealed the DVD case closed. That means when you opened it, you threw that sticker out most likely. It was there at one point though thats for sure.

You don't have a credit card? How do you handle business? With cheques? Steam accepts debit cards (Visa Electron, Maestro) as well. I'm from Europe and I use a Visa Electron and I have no problems whatsoever purchasing games on Steam. And I have roughly 80 games on my Steam account. 50 euros is the standard price for new games. But no one forces you to buy ME2 via Steam, I didn't either. But good luck finding retail Titan Quest with the expansion pack for 5 euros. It's the fantastic sales that make Steam Store great.

In the back of the box " You must activate this product via internet by registering for a steam account" Also in the min system Requirements on the box it says " internet needed" Also steam wasnt working due to maintenance and it was on steams's front page announcement for 1 weak now. Also the maintenance was only 3-4 hours so sure you could wait 4 hours

Um, well you know I know nobody with a credit card. Dunno where you're from but in Germany like 5% of the people that can have a credit card actually have one. We got other bank cards, dunno how they are called in English.

I don't think steam is going anywhere soon...and to be honest the whole industry will probably move towards digital distribution. I wouldn't be surprised in 5-10 years that you couldn't even get a boxed version of a pc game.

So you haven't even used steam and you hate it? That's logical. I can understand your reservations about using a dd service, but as far as most gamers are concerned, steam is the best one there is. And if you want to play a valve game, you have to install steam. Bottom line.

Those are debit cards. I have one of those and it works great. If your doesn't, you should contact your bank. It's not a problem with Steam, it's a problem with your bank.

Welll considering you bought the Orange Box made by Valve, it makes sense it uses Valve's Steam. Retail for Steam games is pretty much just trying to reach a wider audience then if they just had it on Steam. Not everybody is aware of these games and buying them online.

I felt the same way too. This was when I was when in India where at best, I would get 20kbps download speed. There was no end to my frustration. Its really silly that the retail version need internet access, not just to activate, but to have the client installed and so on. I just don't get it. I hated Steam back then.
